{"id":10197,"date":"2021-08-23T08:30:46","date_gmt":"2021-08-23T15:30:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=10197"},"modified":"2021-08-23T08:10:14","modified_gmt":"2021-08-23T15:10:14","slug":"10197","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=10197","title":{"rendered":"WHERE THERE&#8217;S A WILL, THERE&#8217;S A WAY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Suzanne Sparrow Watson<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10202\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=10202\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10202\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10202\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10202\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/1st-cav-burial-300x239.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/1st-cav-burial-300x239.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/1st-cav-burial-768x612.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/1st-cav-burial-1024x817.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Burial of First Cavalry troops at Santo Tomas<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>In February 1945, over <strong>3700 Allied civilians<\/strong> were held captive by the Japanese in the Santo Tomas prison camp in Manila, Philippines.\u00a0 General MacArthur knew of their existence and feared that the <strong>Japanese would execute them<\/strong>, as they had other prisoners under their control.\u00a0 MacArthur faced multiple obstacles in attempting a rescue: the Japanese had a stranglehold on the city, the monsoons had brought drenching rain to the area, and his troops were unfamiliar with the territory.\u00a0 Still, he devised a plan to rescue the civilians and charged the First Cavalry to carry it out.\u00a0 Just 66 hours after landing in the Philippines, the First Cav tanks broke through the gates of Santo Tomas and <strong>liberated the prisoners.<\/strong>\u00a0 Once the civilians were safe, the military fought the Japanese for over a month, before securing the city.\u00a0 I am very familiar with this piece of military history, as my husband and his family were among the 3700 who were saved.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10206\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=10206\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10206\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10206\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-10206\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/airport-300x158.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"158\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/airport-300x158.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/airport-768x403.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/airport-1024x538.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/airport.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10206\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>The line-up in Kabul, August 21<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>It was impossible to watch the <strong>events in Afghanistan<\/strong> last week without wondering, &#8220;where is our modern-day MacArthur?&#8221;.\u00a0 Our exit from Afghanistan has been a debacle, seemingly without intelligence or a plan.\u00a0 It was always going to be messy, and we were never going to be able to extricate all of the Afghan people who helped us, but it didn&#8217;t have to be this bad.\u00a0 As I write this on Sunday there are still <strong>thousands of U.S. citizens<\/strong> trapped by the Taliban, along with untold numbers of Afghani people who helped us and were promised safe passage out of the country.\u00a0 The President&#8217;s message on Friday was filled with untruths.\u00a0 One only had to juxtapose his comment about <strong>Americans&#8217; ability to get out of Kabul<\/strong> with the live reporting by CNN&#8217;s Clarissa Ward, who reported that same hour that it was almost impossible to safely get inside the airport. Biden also claimed that there was <strong>no rift with our allies<\/strong> over our exit from Afghanistan.\u00a0 Earlier that same day the Germans, French and British had blistered the U.S. for the way in which we were exiting, exposing not only our own citizens to harm, but those of our allies.\u00a0 Former British Prime Minister Tony Blair called Biden&#8217;s plan &#8220;imbecilic&#8221;.\u00a0 \u00a0To be sure, there is <em>plenty\u00a0<\/em>of blame to be placed on all three of Biden&#8217;s predecessors for the problems of the past 20 years, but the way in which we leave Afghanistan is <strong>squarely on his shoulders<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=10204\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10204\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-10204\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/austin-and-milley-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/austin-and-milley-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/austin-and-milley-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/austin-and-milley-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/austin-and-milley-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/austin-and-milley.jpg 1438w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\" \/><\/a>We are used to politicians covering their backsides, so Biden&#8217;s remarks weren&#8217;t that surprising.\u00a0 What <em>was<\/em> striking were the actions of <strong>Secretary of Defense<\/strong>\u00a0Austin and<strong>\u00a0Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff<\/strong> Gen. Milley.\u00a0 \u00a0Or more precisely, their inaction.\u00a0 There are a lot of people calling for their resignations over the fiasco in Kabul, but under the Constitution, they answer to the Commander-in-Chief, and must carry out his orders.\u00a0 At their press conference last week they exhibited the same enthusiasm for their mission as would a private ordered to empty latrines.\u00a0 Assuming they disagree with the strategy and are just following orders, I don&#8217;t believe they should be fired.\u00a0<strong> I think they should resign<\/strong>.\u00a0 When General &#8220;Mad Dog&#8221; Mattis disagreed with Trump&#8217;s policy on Syria, he resigned rather than carry out orders with which he vehemently disagreed.\u00a0 \u00a0That&#8217;s what people with principles do.\u00a0 Instead, Austin was asked a question about rescuing all of the Americans and his response was, &#8220;we do not have the capability to go in (to Kabul) and get large numbers of people&#8221;.\u00a0 Yes, General, we do.\u00a0 In fact we have one of the most capable armies in the history of the world.\u00a0 So clearly t&#8217;s not a matter of capabilities, <strong>it&#8217;s a matter of will<\/strong>.\u00a0 Can you imagine any of the great U.S. Generals &#8211; Grant, Eisenhower, Bradley, Patton &#8211; making that statement?\u00a0 Had MacArthur taken that approach, my husband might very well have died in the prison camp.\u00a0 There is a report that a U.S. Army general called his counterpart in Britain, asking him to stop the rescue missions for their citizens because it was making the U.S. look bad.\u00a0 The Pentagon denies that report; to Taliban members<\/strong>.\u00a0 God help them.\u00a0 In the long run, we can only hope that Afghanistan does not once again become a safe haven for terrorists bent on destroying us.<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, the <strong>fate of the Afghanistan<\/strong> lies with its people.\u00a0 Perhaps the younger generation, more educated and aware of the broader world than their counterparts 20 years ago, will <strong>spark a rebellion<\/strong> against the barbarians now in charge.\u00a0 Only time will tell.<\/p>\n<p>Afghanistan has long been known as &#8220;the country where <strong>empires go to die&#8221;<\/strong>.\u00a0 We are now one of them.\u00a0 The shame lies not in our exit, but that the manner of it was not befitting the brave people who fought there.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Suzanne Sparrow Watson In February 1945, over 3700 Allied civilians were held captive by the Japanese in the Santo Tomas prison camp in Manila, Philippines.\u00a0 General MacArthur knew of their existence and feared that the Japanese would execute them, &hellip;
