<\/a>The Ridge Tahoe<\/p><\/div>\n
About a month ago I was notified that we had a timeshare week given to us by Interval International<\/strong> during Covid, that was going to expire by December 24th<\/sup> of this year.\u00a0 We had just returned from our Mexican cruise<\/strong> and with the \u2018holidaze\u2019 fast approaching and air travel becoming less and less attractive, it seemed as if the week would be wasted \u2013 unless we could find somewhere that we wanted to go, was within driving distance, and was available between Thanksgiving <\/strong>and Christmas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n As I surfed Interval\u2019s available online options, I came across The Ridge \u2013 Tahoe<\/strong>, which sits on a ridge (I\u2019m guessing that\u2019s where they got the name) above South Lake Tahoe<\/strong> by Heavenly Valley Ski Resort<\/strong>.\u00a0 Growing up in northern California, I have many fond memories of Lake Tahoe, as my family started weekending and vacationing there when I was about eight years old (Yes, that was back when the earth was still cooling).\u00a0 I had my first \u2018sort of\u2019 date there when I was in junior high and older brother Jack, who was in high school, brought his girlfriend for a stay with our family at \u2018The Lake\u2019<\/strong>, and she brought along her younger sister, who was a year younger than me.\u00a0 We met at Tahoe Tavern<\/strong> and watched a movie.\u00a0 I don\u2019t remember what movie, and it wasn\u2019t because I was preoccupied with my first date, I was petrified and probably was busy eating popcorn and didn\u2019t even offer her any.\u00a0 Sorry, Meg Howard, wherever you are.<\/p>\n Tahoe Tavern<\/p><\/div>\n Tahoe Tavern<\/strong> was a classic!\u00a0 It was first opened in 1902<\/strong> as a luxury hotel just outside of Tahoe City<\/strong>, at the northern end of the lake. It had 225 rooms and a casino \u2013 yes, a casino in California.\u00a0 You could get there by road, rail, or raft and its opulence attracted San Francisco\u2019s high society.\u00a0 \u00a0 The resort\u2019s dress code for lunch and dinner became so formal that a dress and heels were required<\/em> for women and a coat and tie for men.\u00a0 Aside from the very high-end restaurant and theater, there was a bowling alley and a bar with a beautiful view of the lake.\u00a0 Unfortunately, it burned down in the mid-60s, so I\u2019m glad I got a chance to see this magnificent hotel.\u00a0 Condos have been built on the property since and it\u2019s not quite the same; no, it\u2019s not even close to the same.<\/p>\n But I digress. \u00a0Linda and I left this past Saturday afternoon to drive up picturesque Highway 395<\/strong> on the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada mountains<\/strong>.\u00a0 We spent the night in beautiful Bishop <\/strong>so we could drive up to the lake and be in front of a television by Sunday afternoon so we could watch her Vikings<\/strong> play my 49ers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Creekside Inn<\/p><\/div>\n We got to Bishop and had a great dinner at Whiskey Creek<\/strong> restaurant, which has been there since 1924.\u00a0 We stayed at the Creekside Inn<\/strong> in Bishop, which I would definitely recommend, although I have no complements for their complementary breakfast – go next door to the famous Schat’s Bakery & Restaurant<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The Sunday morning drive from Bishop to South Lake Tahoe<\/strong> is one of the most beautiful in the state, particularly on a crisp cloudless morning which shows the spectacular snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains.\u00a0 We arrived in time for the Viking-49er game, which I was a little happier about the results than Linda.<\/p>\n Our time at Tahoe next time<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" by Bob Sparrow About a month ago I was notified that we had a timeshare week given to us by Interval International during Covid, that was going to expire by December 24th of this year.\u00a0 We had just returned from … read more![\"\"](\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Tahoe-Tavern.jpg\")
