{"id":10690,"date":"2022-03-28T09:00:06","date_gmt":"2022-03-28T16:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=10690"},"modified":"2022-03-27T07:47:02","modified_gmt":"2022-03-27T14:47:02","slug":"first-world-problems","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=10690","title":{"rendered":"FIRST WORLD PROBLEMS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Suzanne Sparrow Watson<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=10695\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10695\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-10695\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/tea-bag-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"209\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/tea-bag-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/tea-bag-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/tea-bag.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 209px) 100vw, 209px\" \/><\/a>I recently played in our club&#8217;s big <strong>invitational golf tournament<\/strong>.\u00a0 My partner and I won our flight and came in third overall.\u00a0 But that doesn&#8217;t really tell the story.\u00a0 She played brilliantly and I played like the dog&#8217;s dinner.\u00a0 In fact, that may be an insult to canine fare.\u00a0 My crowning achievement was <strong>picking the right partner<\/strong>.\u00a0 I was despondent about my play and, having to participate in the &#8220;shoot out&#8221; in front of 100+ people to determine the overall winner, was horrifying.\u00a0 But then a good friend sidled up to me and said, &#8220;Get a grip.\u00a0 Think about the people in Ukraine.\u00a0 This is a first-world problem.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=10698\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10698\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-10698\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/wifi-hotel-300x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/wifi-hotel-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/wifi-hotel-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/wifi-hotel.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Of course, she was right.\u00a0 Bad play in a golf tournament on a beautiful blue-sky day, surrounded by friends, is not something to complain about.\u00a0 Most of us have lives that are filled with first-world problems.\u00a0 I&#8217;ve heard people complain that their<strong> Wi-fi connection at the Ritz<\/strong> was too slow or the roast on their Tanzania Peaberry coffee beans was overdone. The term &#8220;first world&#8221; is actually an anachronism, since we no longer talk about the \u201cthird world\u201d. We have shifted to the more optimistic phrase \u201cdeveloping world\u201d.\u00a0 Still, the idea of <strong>ridiculous first world complaints<\/strong> persist, and they seem particularly trivial in contrast to the horrors we&#8217;re seeing in Ukraine on the nightly news.<\/p>\n<p>But for your amusement this Monday morning, and as some relief from the constant bad news, here are some of the first world problems I have heard lately:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>\u00a0My new iPhone 13 Pro Max doesn&#8217;t filter out spam calls<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0I can&#8217;t remember the password to my American Express Platinum card account<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Neiman&#8217;s didn&#8217;t have the Christian Louboutin shoes in my size<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0I had to open a can that didn&#8217;t have a pull ring<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0My two-hour Amazon delivery was thirty minutes late<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0Why didn&#8217;t Amazon release the whole season of <em>&#8220;The Marvelous Mrs. Maizel&#8221;<\/em> at once?<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0My hotel in the Maldives didn&#8217;t have enough outlets in the room<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0I chipped my $80 ombre nail gel on the first day<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0My personal trainer took the week off to be with his kids on spring break<\/li>\n<li>\u00a0We had to fly to L.A. <em>three times<\/em> to get both of my mother-of-the-bride gowns fitted by Monique Lhuillier<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=10696\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10696\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-10696\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/humblebrag-300x208.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"138\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/humblebrag-300x208.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/humblebrag-768x531.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/humblebrag-1024x708.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/humblebrag.jpg 1599w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a>Then there are the &#8220;complaints&#8221; that are really something else: <strong>the humblebrag.<\/strong>\u00a0 A humblebrag is defined as &#8220;an ostensibly modest or self-deprecating statement whose actual purpose is to draw attention to something of which one is proud.&#8221;\u00a0 I think Facebook and Instagram have <strong>built their business models<\/strong> around humblebragging.\u00a0 Parents of school-aged children are particularly good at it. Their posts usually go something like this: &#8220;I am so clumsy.
