<\/a>Me at the Giggling Marlin<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n You might not have noticed, but over the past eleven years of writing about my experiences, you\u2019ve not heard a lot of \u2018fish stories\u2019.\u00a0 Just one in fact, which sort of sums up my fishing acumen \u2013 my trip to Cabo<\/strong> back in July 2012.\u00a0 Here\u2019s the link in case you\u2019re in need of a good laugh!<\/p>\n https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=712<\/a><\/p>\n Yes, that\u2019s me hanging upside down at the Giggling Marlin <\/strong>in Cabo,\u00a0the penalty for being \u2018skunked\u2019.\u00a0 And in a \u2018father-like-son\u2019 moment, Jeff experienced the same fate.<\/p>\n Jeff at the Giggling Marlin<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n Now, 10 years later, we\u2019re off to try fishing again, this time to Alaska<\/strong> with neighbors, Mark Johnson<\/strong>, Larry Affentranger<\/strong> and our three sons\/sons-in-law, Jeff Sparrow<\/strong>, Chase Johnson<\/strong> and Matt Paul<\/strong>. \u00a0Mark and Larry are experienced fishermen, why they invited us along, I\u2019m not sure \u2013 other than comic relief.\u00a0 Or maybe they just didn\u2019t believe how bad a fisherman we were and wanted to witness it firsthand.<\/p>\n When Jeff was growing up, I felt obligated to take him fishing. Isn\u2019t that what dads and sons do?\u00a0 So, I took him to Big Bear Lake<\/strong> \u2013 we caught a boot, Mammoth\u2019s Lake Mary<\/strong> \u2013 we caught a lady\u2019s undergarment, Lake Tahoe<\/strong> \u2013 we caught a cold.\u00a0 We\u2019ve NEVER caught a fish!\u00a0 When I sent Jeff the flyer about this Alaska fishing trip which\u00a0‘GUARANTEED\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0us to catch fish, he called me after he\u2019d read the brochure and said, \u201cThey may have to change their guarantee after the Sparrow boys\u2019 visit!\u201d<\/p>\n We\u2019re headed to Sitka, Alaska<\/strong>, which is on the \u2018Alaskan Panhandle\u2019 on the island of Baranof<\/strong> in the Gulf of Alaska<\/strong> between Juneau<\/strong> and Ketchikan<\/strong>\u2013 I\u2019m not sure if we can see Russia from there or not.\u00a0 I\u2019ll let you know. \u00a0Sitka was actually under Russian rule from 1799 \u2013 1867.\u00a0 So, it may be on Russia\u2019s list to re-take at some point \u2013 hopefully not this week!<\/p>\n While Sitka is the 5th<\/sup> largest city in Alaska, it has only a population of about 8,500<\/strong>.\u00a0 If you want to get a real \u2018feel\u2019 for the city, you can watch the Sandra Bullock movie, The Proposal<\/em><\/strong>, which was shot there.<\/p>\n On my \u2018check the box\u2019 list, I can tell you that Alaska is one of only five of the United States that I\u2019ve never visited.\u00a0 Additionally, I’m getting another check the box – some of you more senior, seniors will remember the old Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Dorothy Lamour<\/strong> \u2018Road movies\u2019, which took them to various exotic locations around the world.\u00a0 Even though, as my wife continually reminds me, the movies were shot in the back lot of Paramount Studios in Hollywood, I still credit them for giving me the \u2019travel lust\u2019 that keeps we wanting to visit more and more places.\u00a0 The seven \u2018road movies\u2019 included the following destinations: Singapore, Zanzibar, Morocco, Bali, Hong Kong, Rio<\/strong> and Utopia<\/strong> (Utopia in the movie is Alaska).\u00a0 So, this will be the first \u2018road movie\u2019 destination that I\u2019ve visited.\u00a0 I want to visit them all and I’m not getting any younger!<\/p>\n Sitka, Alaska<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n Back to Alaska, the plan is to fly up there on Saturday, fish on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday and fly back on Wednesday.\u00a0 I\u2019m sure Mark, Chase, Larry and Matt will be bringing back large packages<\/strong> of flash-frozen Halibut, Salmon and whatever else is swimming around up there.\u00a0 Jeff\u2019s and my bag will be filled with dirty laundry, Band-Aids to cover hook gashes and soggy shoes.\u00a0 The weather prediction as of now is \u2018rain\u2019 every day! \u00a0\u00a0So, it will be cold, wet and probably fishless, but I\u2019m still guessing we will have a good time!<\/p>\n I’ll let you know.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" by Bob Sparrow You might not have noticed, but over the past eleven years of writing about my experiences, you\u2019ve not heard a lot of \u2018fish stories\u2019.\u00a0 Just one in fact, which sort of sums up my fishing acumen \u2013 … read more![\"\"](\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Jeff-225x300.jpg\")
