{"id":1113,"date":"2013-01-14T06:00:34","date_gmt":"2013-01-14T14:00:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/morningnewsinverse.com\/?p=1113"},"modified":"2013-01-14T06:27:51","modified_gmt":"2013-01-14T14:27:51","slug":"catalina-hamilton-cove-glenmore-plaza-hotel-and-the-other-side","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=1113","title":{"rendered":"Catalina: Hamilton Cove, Glenmore Plaza Hotel and the \u2018Other Side\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\" align=\"center\">by Bob Sparrow<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/morningnewsinverse.com\/?attachment_id=1115\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1115\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1115 alignleft\" style=\"width: 207px;height: 143px\" alt=\"photo (89)\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/photo-89.jpg\" width=\"259\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/photo-89.jpg 640w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/photo-89-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 259px) 100vw, 259px\" \/><\/a>Twenty-thirteen portends to be an unusual year for me, perhaps even paranormal, what with all the \u2018other side\u2019 things that helped usher in a year with a 13 in it.\u00a0 No, I\u2019m not superstitious, but like <strong>Michael Scott<\/strong>, I am a <i>little <\/i>\u2018stitious\u2019.\u00a0 While most <strong>New Year\u2019s<\/strong> days I\u2019ve watched the sun set into the Pacific Ocean somewhere along the<strong> \u2018left coast\u2019<\/strong>, this year I welcomed in the new year on the \u2018other side\u2019 watching the sun <i>coming up<\/i> over the Pacific from <strong>Hamilton Cove<\/strong> on Catalina Island \u2013 truly a unique experience.\u00a0 OK, truth is there haven\u2019t been too many years when I\u2019ve even seen the sun on New Year\u2019s Day, but that\u2019s another story.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve never been there, Hamilton Cove looks like it belongs on the \u2018other side\u2019 of the Atlantic, perhaps on a <strong>Greek island coastline<\/strong> or hanging somewhere off the<strong> Amalfi Coast in Italy<\/strong>. \u00a0I suppose if you have been there, it still looks that way, but as if getting away from it all in Catalina wasn\u2019t enough, several of us wanted to get away from the people who wanted to get away from it all \u2013 to the \u2018other side\u2019 of Catalina.\u00a0 I\u00a0discovered that Catalina is a little like the moon, in that most people only see one side, although I can tell you now from experience, that the \u2018other side\u2019 of Catalina is not dark . . . <a href=\"http:\/\/morningnewsinverse.com\/?attachment_id=1117\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1117\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1117 alignright\" alt=\"photo (95)\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/photo-95.jpg\" width=\"196\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a>unless you go at night, then it\u2019s really dark.\u00a0 Like the moon, it\u2019s not easy to get to the \u2018other side\u2019 of Catalina, you have to have a pass that gets you through the gate on the road to the\u00a0&#8216;other side&#8217; that goes through\u00a0the infamous<strong> \u2018Airport in the Sky\u2019<\/strong>, Catalina\u2019s private airport where planes don\u2019t really take off from the runway, the runway simply drops out from under them after several thousand feet and, presto, they\u2019re airborne.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/morningnewsinverse.com\/?attachment_id=1114\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1114\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" style=\"width: 115px;height: 127px\" alt=\"glenmore plaza hotel\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/glenmore-plaza-hotel.jpg\" width=\"122\" height=\"139\" \/><\/a>We were fortunate to be in the company of one <strong>Michael Amoroso<\/strong>, whose family has lived on the island for over twenty years and owns and operate the <i><strong>Glenmore Plaza Hotel<\/strong>, <\/i>\u2018the second oldest continuously operating hotel in California\u2019, so says Michael\u2019s brother, Jimmy, who manages the hotel.\u00a0 I thought it odd that a hotel in this relatively remote location would have such a distinction so I asked Jimmy Jr., Jimmy\u2019s son who works at the hotel, \u201cWhose #1?\u201d\u00a0 He replied like someone who\u2019d studied hotel history his entire life, \u201c<strong>The Hotel\u00a0del Coronado<\/strong>.\u201d\u00a0 I decided to see what Google had to say on the matter:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u2018Oldest hotel in California\u2019<\/strong> \u2013 the Benicia in northern California \u2013 est. 1852<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u2018One of the oldest hotels in California&#8217;<\/strong> \u2013 Murphy\u2019s in the gold country \u2013 est. 1856<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u2018One of the oldest continuously operating hotels in Calif\u2019<\/strong> \u2013 National Hotel (also in the gold country) \u2013 est. 1859<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u2018Largest resort hotel in the world\u2019<\/strong> \u2013 Hotel del Coronado \u2013 est. 1888<\/li>\n<li><strong>\u2018Second oldest hotel in California\u2019<\/strong> \u2013 so stated on Google about the Glenmore Plaza Hotel, but it doesn\u2019t say who\u2019s first or when the Glenmore was established.\u00a0 Wikipedia probably got their information from Jimmy Jr. too.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I also found on Google a picture with a caption that said, <strong>&#8216;Second oldest hotel in California&#8217;<\/strong> &#8211; it was not a picture of the Glenmore.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, back on the road to \u2018the other side\u2019, just before reaching the airport we see a <strong>buffalo<\/strong> standing alongside the road.\u00a0 I\u2019ll tell you the <a href=\"http:\/\/morningnewsinverse.com\/?attachment_id=1116\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1116\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"width: 143px;height: 104px\" alt=\"photo (92)\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/photo-92.jpg\" width=\"185\" height=\"155\" \/><\/a>history of\u00a0how buffalo\u00a0got on the island . . . another time.\u00a0 After a brief stop at the airport, we start down on the western slope of the island; the paved road turns\u00a0to dirt.\u00a0 We drive past <strong>El Rancho Escondido<\/strong>, a ranch, Michael tells us, started by the Wrigley family back in the \u201830s for breeding<strong> Arabian horses<\/strong> \u2013 another story too\u00a0long to tell here.\u00a0 We also pass a vineyard &#8211; yes, another story.\u00a0 The road leads us to a west coast inlet called<strong> \u2018Little Harbor\u2019<\/strong>, where there is no man-made\u00a0harbor, but a small campgrounds and no campers, no nothing except a beautiful uncluttered coastline, which is pretty much what all of the \u2018other side\u2019 of Catalina is.\u00a0 We walked along the beach on this beautiful January day and enjoyed the fresh air, sunshine and solitude.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/morningnewsinverse.com\/?attachment_id=1119\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1119\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" alt=\"little harbor\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/little-harbor.png\" width=\"253\" height=\"130\" \/><\/a>Our return to civilization is uneventful except for the stories Michael tells us of the<strong> ghosts<\/strong> that\u00a0\u00a0 inhabit the island.\u00a0 Back in <strong>Avalon<\/strong> we thank Michael for exposing us to the many stories and sides of Catalina, particularly \u2018the other side\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Subscribe to our blog and get it &#8216;free&#8217;
