{"id":11198,"date":"2022-10-17T09:00:47","date_gmt":"2022-10-17T16:00:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=11198"},"modified":"2022-10-17T08:39:59","modified_gmt":"2022-10-17T15:39:59","slug":"overwhelmed-in-the-ice-cream-aisle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=11198","title":{"rendered":"LOST AND CONFUSED IN THE ICE CREAM AISLE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Suzanne Sparrow Watson<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11202\" style=\"width: 244px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=11202\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11202\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11202\" class=\"wp-image-11202\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/ice-cream-300x243.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"234\" height=\"190\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/ice-cream-300x243.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/ice-cream.jpg 317w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11202\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>How many choices do you need?<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>My love of cake notwithstanding, sometimes in the summer months I indulge in ice cream.\u00a0 Not long ago I was perusing the <strong>ice cream aisle at the supermarket <\/strong>and as I scanned the freezer shelves, I marveled at the options: full fat, slow-churned, low fat, sugar free, sherbet, gelato, ices, soy ice cream, rice ice cream, oat milk ice cream, and on and on.\u00a0 The <strong>flavors were as varied<\/strong> as the types, ranging from French Vanilla (it&#8217;s never just &#8220;vanilla&#8221; anymore) to Phish Food (which tastes better than it sounds).\u00a0 I was so overwhelmed that I came home empty-handed, once again convinced that my love of cake, in part, exists because it is so much simpler than ice cream.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11210\" style=\"width: 121px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=11210\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11210\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11210\" class=\" wp-image-11210\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/chocolate-ice-cream-218x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"111\" height=\"153\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/chocolate-ice-cream-218x300.jpg 218w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/chocolate-ice-cream.jpg 655w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 111px) 100vw, 111px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11210\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>My favorite<\/strong>!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I thought back to when I was a kid and ice cream was our nightly dessert.\u00a0 Our mother was not a baker, but <strong>she could buy a mean container of ice cream<\/strong>.\u00a0 There were no fancy flavors back then; we either had chocolate or vanilla.\u00a0 Some families had strawberry, but we saw little attraction in that.\u00a0 Our neighbors had an ice cream churn and made fresh fruit ice cream all summer long, but I didn&#8217;t trust anything that didn&#8217;t come out of a cardboard box.\u00a0 Our family was split as to flavors; our dad, Bob and I liked chocolate, while our mom and brother Jack liked vanilla.\u00a0 I hated it when mom served vanilla until Bob taught me to <strong>pour a generous heap of Hershey&#8217;s chocolate sauce<\/strong> over it and blend until &#8211; voila! &#8211; it turned to chocolate.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11197\" style=\"width: 345px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=11197\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11197\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11197\" class=\" wp-image-11197\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/novato-creamery-resized-300x179.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"335\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/novato-creamery-resized-300x179.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/novato-creamery-resized.jpg 662w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 335px) 100vw, 335px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11197\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>The Novato Creamery on the main street in town<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>It was always a special occasion when I got to go out for ice cream.\u00a0 Our dad&#8217;s shop was just down the street from the <strong>Borden&#8217;s Novato Creamery<\/strong>.\u00a0 Occasionally mom would drop me off with dad while she ran errands and then he and I would sneak down to the Creamery. I still remember the horseshoe-shaped counter and Betty, the nice waitress who greeted us with a dimpled smile.\u00a0 We always ordered a chocolate milk shake.\u00a0 To my dad&#8217;s everlasting credit, <strong>he never made me share<\/strong>.\u00a0 We would watch as Betty placed the ice cream and milk into the Hamilton Beach blender&#8217;s metal cups. We not only each got a shake, but it was at the Creamery I was introduced to that wonderful tradition of <strong>the &#8220;sidecar&#8221;<\/strong>.\u00a0 Back in the day before corporate accountants figured out exactly how much ice cream and milk would fit into a milk shake glass, there was always a bit of shake left in the metal cup.\u00a0 The frosty &#8220;sidecar&#8221; was placed next to the full glass, as if taunting us to finish the whole thing.\u00a0 We always did.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11195\" style=\"width: 213px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=11195\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11195\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11195\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-11195\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/twiggy-203x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"203\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/twiggy-203x300.jpg 203w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/twiggy.jpg 257w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 203px) 100vw, 203px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11195\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Twiggy. I hate her.<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Creamery eventually closed, in part due to the newly opened <strong>Berkeley Farms, <\/strong>a diner that served up legendary banana splits.\u00a0 Then in 1966 a new company &#8211; Baskin-Robbins &#8211; opened in our town.\u00a0 We gazed in wonderment at their flavors. Thirty-one! Prior to that we thought <strong>Spumoni\u00a0was the most exotic<\/strong> ice cream available.\u00a0 My best friend and I became regulars at BR.\u00a0 She liked Mint Chocolate Chip and I liked Jamoca Almond Fudge.
