Somehow the owner always manages to blurt out some version of, &#8220;I really don&#8217;t know much about the breed or age because I rescued him\/her.&#8221;\u00a0 Sheesh!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=11586\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11586\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-11586\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/shelter-dog-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"218\" height=\"145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/shelter-dog-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/shelter-dog-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/shelter-dog-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/shelter-dog-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/shelter-dog.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><\/a>I first started noticing the trend of <strong>&#8220;rescue virtue-signaling&#8221;<\/strong> about ten years ago.\u00a0 Let me be clear, I think it is terrific to rescue dogs.\u00a0 If you saw the 60 Minutes episode about dogs a week ago you were probably not surprised to learn that dogs have a &#8220;kindness gene&#8221;.\u00a0 None of them deserve to be locked up in a cage.\u00a0 All they want is a little love, a scratch behind the ear and some food and shelter.\u00a0 In our family we have had a variety of dogs over the years, half rescue and half purebred.\u00a0 But here&#8217;s the thing: when someone asked us about the rescue dogs, we always gave an answer that was as close to accurate as we could get.\u00a0 <strong>Veterinarians are actually very good<\/strong> at assessing the breed and age of a dog.\u00a0 I have a hard time believing that people who spend hours looking at dog videos on Instagram Reels or dress their dog up like a ballerina, don&#8217;t have the time or inclination to ask their vet for an opinion on the breed and age of their dog.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=11587\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-11587\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-11587\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Dog-DNA-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"217\" height=\"217\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Dog-DNA-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Dog-DNA-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Dog-DNA-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Dog-DNA-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Dog-DNA.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/a>On my walk around the neighborhood last week, I met a woman walking her dog and <strong>stopped to ask her about the dog.<\/strong>\u00a0 She told me all about how she rescued the dog but couldn&#8217;t tell me anything else about it.\u00a0 I suggested that she purchase a dog DNA test.\u00a0 She was stunned at my suggestion.\u00a0 &#8220;Why would I do that?&#8221;, she asked.\u00a0 I told her it would provide more information about the breed of the dog, which could be helpful in preventing or understanding future medical issues.\u00a0 I left our encounter convinced that she had <strong>no intention of finding out more<\/strong> about her canine companion.\u00a0 Because &#8211; and here&#8217;s the reason I find this trend so annoying &#8211; I think this woman finds more self-satisfaction in telling people that she&#8217;s rescued a dog that she would in saying, &#8220;She&#8217;s a Malti-poo mix and she&#8217;s about three years old.&#8221;\u00a0 Where&#8217;s the fun in that?\u00a0 How can the world possibly know what a wonderful person she is if she gives such a straightforward answer?<\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll get off my soapbox now.\u00a0 But I&#8217;m still going to tell people to get their dogs tested.\u00a0 If people want to feel virtuous, they should donate time and money to the local animal shelter.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Suzanne Sparrow Watson In 1975 I purchased my first house, which to me, was less about a roof over my head more about having a yard for a dog.\u00a0 A couple of months after settling in, I ventured to &hellip;
