{"id":12102,"date":"2023-10-09T09:00:15","date_gmt":"2023-10-09T16:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=12102"},"modified":"2023-10-09T08:14:22","modified_gmt":"2023-10-09T15:14:22","slug":"dont-leave-them-laughing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=12102","title":{"rendered":"DON&#8217;T LEAVE THEM LAUGHING"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Suzanne Sparrow Watson<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=12110\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12110\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-12110\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/too-old-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"223\" height=\"125\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/too-old-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/too-old.jpg 474w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 223px) 100vw, 223px\" \/><\/a>I was listening to a late-night talk show a couple of weeks ago when the host said, &#8220;Diane Feinstein died today.\u00a0 <strong>How could they tell?<\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0 The audience, primarily composed of young people, roared with laughter.\u00a0 Of course, given her recent cognitive and physical health issues, their perception of her was of an older, feeble woman.\u00a0 But I remember someone quite different.\u00a0 Back in 1978 I was working in the financial district of San Francisco when <strong>George Moscone and Harvey Milk were assassinated<\/strong>.\u00a0 This was long before shootings became an everyday occurrence, so everyone in the community was shocked.\u00a0 Diane Feinstein was the president of the Board of Supervisors, so she became the acting mayor that day.\u00a0 She immediately took charge of the situation; she was a steady hand on the tiller, bringing calm and order to the ensuing days and weeks.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12108\" style=\"width: 170px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=12108\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12108\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12108\" class=\" wp-image-12108\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Stanford-300x285.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"160\" height=\"152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Stanford-300x285.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Stanford.jpg 699w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 160px) 100vw, 160px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12108\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Feinstein at Stanford<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Feinstein was well-suited to the task; she had plenty of experience in navigating rough waters.\u00a0 She was the <strong>daughter of a prominent surgeon<\/strong> and she and her two sisters enjoyed the privileges of an upper-class lifestyle. But unbeknownst to anyone outside the family, her mother, Betty, suffered from an undiagnosed brain disorder and was prone to angry \u2014 even violent \u2014 outbursts. She once tried to drown one of the girls in the bathtub. Feinstein later said that she and her sisters <strong>lived on tenterhooks<\/strong> throughout their childhood.\u00a0 Feinstein eventually graduated from Stanford with a degree in History and began work at a non-profit foundation. She also married during this time and had a daughter, but the marriage was short-lived.\u00a0 In 1960 Governor Pat Brown appointed her to the California Women&#8217;s Parole Board, on which she served until 1966.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12109\" style=\"width: 141px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=12109\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12109\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12109\" class=\" wp-image-12109\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/pier-39-212x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"131\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/pier-39-212x300.jpg 212w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/pier-39.jpg 649w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 131px) 100vw, 131px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12109\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>A lost bet<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>In 1969 she was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, a position she held until her ascension to mayor that sad day in 1978. Prior to becoming mayor, her <strong>most flamboyant act<\/strong> was to appear at the opening of Pier 39 in a bathing suit.\u00a0 As Board president she had been dismayed by the lack of progress on the project.\u00a0 The developer assured her it would open on time, to which she replied, &#8220;If it opens on schedule, I&#8217;ll <strong>wear a bikini<\/strong> to the ribbon cutting.&#8221;\u00a0 To her chagrin, the project did open on schedule, although only half of the attractions and restaurants were completed.\u00a0 So, her compromise was to wear a one-piece suit to the ceremonies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12107\" style=\"width: 161px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=12107\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12107\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12107\" class=\" wp-image-12107\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Diane_Feinstein_Cable_Car-233x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"151\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Diane_Feinstein_Cable_Car-233x300.jpeg 233w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Diane_Feinstein_Cable_Car.jpeg 270w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 151px) 100vw, 151px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12107\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>The cable car restoration<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Just a few months after the Pier 39 opening the assassinations took place and Feinstein was all business. She was the <strong>first woman and the first Jewish person to hold the position.\u00a0 <\/strong>The all-male power structure in The City didn&#8217;t know quite what to make of her, but she forged ahead.\u00a0 In 1979 she won the mayoral race by a slim majority and began to systematically work on improving the quality of life in the city.\u00a0\u00a0Her accomplishments were significant.\u00a0 In 1979 the historic cable car system in San Francisco, so symbolic of the city, was shut down for repairs.\u00a0 By 1982 the system had to stop operations entirely.\u00a0 Feinstein lobbied vigorously for Federal money and raised private funds to restore the system.\u00a0 She <strong>instituted the modern Fleet Week,<\/strong> a celebration of Navy shipbuilding and Blue Angel air shows.\u00a0 She and her husband, Richard Blum, donated a herd of twelve bison to Golden Gate Park to keep the &#8220;bison tradition&#8221; alive.\u00a0 By the time she ran for reelection in 1983 she garnered 80% of the vote.<\/p>\n<p>After leaving the mayor&#8217;s office she ran unsuccessfully for governor in 1990, and then in 1992 became the <strong>first of two women<\/strong> (Barbara Boxer being the other) elected as Senator from California.\u00a0 She had a long &#8211; too long &#8211; career in the Senate.\u00a0 Which brings me to my point.\u00a0 The younger people who laughed at the late-night host&#8217;s joke about her only think of her as old and doddering.\u00a0 They would not recognize the Diane Feinstein I remember when she was vital and accomplished.\u00a0 The truth is, she <strong>stayed on stage too long<\/strong>.\u00a0 One wishes that if she lacked the ability to retire, that someone close to her would have persuaded her to do so.\u00a0 The same can be said for a lot of politicians.\u00a0 I wish more would take the position of Mitt Romney, who said the following when he announced that he would not run for re-election: &#8220;I spent my last 25 years in public service of one kind or another. At the end of another term, I\u2019d be in my mid 80s.
