{"id":12758,"date":"2024-07-22T08:00:29","date_gmt":"2024-07-22T15:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=12758"},"modified":"2024-07-21T16:48:30","modified_gmt":"2024-07-21T23:48:30","slug":"as-suspected-im-better-at-cruising-than-golfing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=12758","title":{"rendered":"As Suspected, I&#8217;m Better at Cruising than Golfing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Bob Sparrow<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12760\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=12760\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12760\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12760\" class=\"wp-image-12760\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Ship-route-300x170.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"284\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Ship-route-300x170.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Ship-route-1024x581.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Ship-route-768x436.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Ship-route-1536x871.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Ship-route-2048x1162.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12760\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pride of America Golf Ahoy ship route<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I left you last as we were just boarding <strong>Norwegian Cruise Line\u2019s<\/strong> \u2018<strong><em>Pride of America\u2019<\/em><\/strong> on Saturday afternoon in <strong>Honolulu<\/strong>.\u00a0 If I&#8217;m being honest, it\u2019s not the best ship we\u2019ve ever been on, in fact, it might have been the worst \u2013 it\u2019s fairly dated, with small cabins and marginal entertainment and food. \u00a0We\u2019ve sailed on Norwegian before and have been very happy with the ship, but this one is a little tired.\u00a0 But that is made up for with the fabulous golf courses we will be playing over the next week and the fact that this ship does have the <strong>\u2018unlimited drink package\u2019<\/strong>, which in Hawaii, is a very valuable thing. \u00a0Where else would you even try a <strong>Rebellious Fish<\/strong>, a <strong>Funky Monk,<\/strong> or a <strong>Sparkling Garden<\/strong>?\u00a0 Yep, I tried them all!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interesting fact about Honolulu:<\/strong> Waikiki Beach is almost entirely manmade.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sunday: <\/strong>We spend the night, apparently going in circles as <strong>Maui<\/strong> is only a short distance away, so when we wake up on Sunday morning, we are docked at <strong>Kahului Harbor<\/strong>, by the airport.\u00a0 Our driver meets us at the ship and we travel past the devastated-by-fire remains of Lahaina (so heartbreaking), on our way to the <strong>Plantation Course at Kapalua<\/strong>.\u00a0 As many of you know, the Plantation Course is where the PGA opens their season every year in January and it is a very difficult course, with lots of elevation. \u00a0It seems I was really focusing on the beautiful views that day rather than golf, as I continued to litter the grounds with a number of my golf balls; at least I know they have a beautiful final resting place.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Monday:<\/strong> Our ship stayed in Maui and our driver picks us up at the ship in the morning and takes us to the other end of the island to the <strong>Emerald Course at Wailea<\/strong>.\u00a0 It was another beautiful day, on another beautiful, and more friendly, golf course.\u00a0 No balls put to rest on this day.\u00a0 After the mandatory \u2018after-the-round-cocktail\u2019 our driver picks us up and returns us to the ship.\u00a0 We have dinner reservations at <strong>Cagney\u2019s Steak House<\/strong> on board and have a very nice meal.\u00a0 Entertainment was a little light, as we saw a comedian, who was sometimes funny.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12763\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=12763\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12763\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12763\" class=\"wp-image-12763 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Mauni-Lani.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12763\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mauni Lani<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Interesting fact about Maui: <\/strong>Maui is home to the largest dormant volcano in the world \u2013 Mt. Haleakal\u0101<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tuesday\/Wednesday: <\/strong>We wake up this morning on the <strong>Hilo<\/strong> side of the <strong>Big Island<\/strong>, so with a day of rest from golf, and nothing we haven\u2019t seen or want to see in Hilo, we hang out on the ship.\u00a0 That evening, the ship sails around to the other side of the island to the Kona side, where we get off in the morning and play golf at <strong>Mauna Lani<\/strong>, a beautiful oceanfront golf course that is magnificent!\u00a0 Jack &amp; JJ Budd, who are vacationing with their grandkids on the Big Island, meet us prior to our tee time.\u00a0 Another beautiful day as we are amazed by the homes on this magnificent golf course.<\/p>\n<p>Back on the boat and we make the evening voyage from the Big Island to Kauai.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interesting fact about The Big Island: <\/strong>Mauna Kea Volcano is the tallest mountain in the world from the sea floor at 33,000 feet (Mt. Everest, the tallest mountain on land is 29,032 feet)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_12764\" style=\"width: 231px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=12764\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12764\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12764\" class=\"wp-image-12764 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Tracy-221x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"221\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Tracy-221x300.jpg 221w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Tracy-755x1024.jpg 755w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Tracy-768x1042.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Tracy-1132x1536.jpg 1132w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Tracy-1510x2048.jpg 1510w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/Tracy-scaled.jpg 1887w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 221px) 100vw, 221px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-12764\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Linda &amp; me with Tracy Sanborn<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Thursday\/Friday:<\/strong> We awake the next morning in <strong>Nawilwili Bay<\/strong> on the island of <strong>Kauai<\/strong>, where we disembark and are met by our driver, who takes us to <strong>Poipu Bay Golf Course<\/strong>.\u00a0 The course and day are beautiful, but very windy, so golf takes a back seat to great views and putting some balls in their beautiful final resting place.\u00a0 We stay docked in Kauai for the evening and play <strong>Kohalani Ocean Course<\/strong>, with many holes right along the coast line.\u00a0 Yes, I put some balls to rest here, but they didn\u2019t mind, it is a beautiful, tropical golf course.\u00a0 A bonus was that we were met after the round of golf by my cousin, Tracy Sanborn, who I hadn\u2019t see in over 50 years (her mom and my dad were siblings); she just happened to be staying at her timeshare in <strong>Princeville<\/strong> with her son, daughter-in-law and their 6-month-old baby boy.\u00a0 Great to see them!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interesting fact about Kauai:<\/strong> Kauai is the wettest place on earth, Mt.
