This area also boasts four <strong>State Parks<\/strong>, two <strong>National Monuments<\/strong>, plus <strong>Monument Valley<\/strong>, famous for its iconic mesas and buttes often featured in Western movies . . . as well as providing scenic hiding places for my golf balls.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"704\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ball-1-704x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13403\" style=\"width:237px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ball-1-704x1024.jpeg 704w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ball-1-206x300.jpeg 206w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ball-1-768x1116.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ball-1-1057x1536.jpeg 1057w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ball-1-1409x2048.jpeg 1409w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ball-1.jpeg 1574w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 704px) 100vw, 704px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8220;Found it!!&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Yes, my travels last week took me first to the city of St. George, in southern Utah, to play golf at<strong> The Ledges<\/strong>, <strong>Coral Canyon<\/strong>, and <strong>Copper Rock<\/strong>, but let\u2019s not talk about my golf game when southern Utah has so much more to offer than my \u2018Aww shits\u2019 and \u201cCan you hand me another ball?\u201d. \u00a0This home of the Mormons, who make up about 70% of the cities&#8217; population, is a most unique and beautiful place.\u00a0 The first <strong>Latter-day Saints<\/strong> (<strong>LDS\/Mormon<\/strong>) temple, built west of the Mississippi, was not built in <strong>Salt Lake City<\/strong>, but in St. George in 1877.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city of St. George was founded in 1861, notwithstanding the fact that for some thousands of years before that, the area was inhabited by the <strong>Ute<\/strong>, <strong>Goshutes<\/strong>, <strong>Paiutes<\/strong>, S<strong>hoshone<\/strong>, and <strong>Navajo<\/strong> Indians.&nbsp; But the city was founded as part of the Mormon <strong>\u2018Cotton Mission\u2019<\/strong> under <strong>Brigham Young<\/strong>, which aimed to establish in Utah, a cotton-growing region in the face of the <strong>Civil War<\/strong>, as northerners believed that they would no longer be getting cotton from the South.&nbsp; Even though cotton growing proved to be an unsuccessful venture, this area became known as <strong>Dixie<\/strong>.&nbsp; It remained being called that until 2021, when the \u2018woke folk\u2019 decided that the name was racist.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"774\" height=\"660\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ball-2-1.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13411\" style=\"width:299px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ball-2-1.jpeg 774w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ball-2-1-300x256.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Ball-2-1-768x655.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 774px) 100vw, 774px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8220;Got it!!&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>There is controversy about how St. George got its name, but I\u2019m going with the story that it was named after <strong>George Smith<\/strong>, first cousin to <strong>Joseph Smith<\/strong>, founder of the LDS movement.\u00a0 George settled in the area and encouraged residents to eat raw, unpeeled potatoes in order to cure scurvy \u2013 it sort of worked, as potatoes do contain some Vitamin C, but the cure probably came from the oranges they ate after they ate the potatoes to get that raw potato taste out of their mouths.\u00a0\u00a0 Either way, it earned George the name, <strong>\u2018Potato Saint<\/strong>, thus Saint George.\u00a0 George may not have been a real saint, but he was a real Mormon who had seven wives and 20 children.\u00a0 Of course, polygamy is not legal today, but it is said that you don\u2019t have to be Mormon to have one too many wives.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Colorado-River-1024x810.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13414\" style=\"width:337px;height:auto\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Colorado-River-1024x810.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Colorado-River-300x237.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Colorado-River-768x607.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/Colorado-River.jpg 1425w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">&#8220;I found your ball&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>My golf game gave me plenty of opportunities to explore the flora and fauna of the surrounding area, and it is, indeed, beautiful; not my golf game, but all the places I looked for my golf ball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rest of this week will be spent losing golf balls in an area where I&#8217;m more familiar with losing things . . .
