Normally I\u2019m looking ahead to my next trip to somewhere interesting, and I am still doing that, but this week, since I don\u2019t see anything interesting in my immediate future, I\u2019m looking way ahead. This idea was sparked by an article I recently read about the TV show, The Jetsons<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 admittedly not great literature, but I found it interesting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n For those who may not remember the Jetsons or for that matter weren\u2019t even alive when the Jetsons aired, they were the counterpart to The Flintstones<\/strong><\/em> \u2013 OK, you may not remember them either, but they were an animated series on TV about a family in the Stone Age<\/strong>, while the Jetsons were an animated TV series about a family in the future. Both created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera, founders of Hanna-Barbera Studios<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n The article I read was about how many of the things that appeared on the Jetsons<\/strong> show, which aired nearly 65 years ago in 1962, are part of our society today. What did they get right?<\/p>\n\n\n\n The most prevelent was the video phone<\/strong>, which was unheard of in 1962, but today we have Skype<\/strong>, Zoom<\/strong> and FaceTime<\/strong>. George Jetson also wore a video watch which was very similar to today\u2019s \u2018smart\u2019 watches.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n There were several other things they got right about the future, like flat screen TVs, robotic vacuum cleaners<\/strong> and ways of looking inside the human body by swallowing a pill that had a camera in it. I didn\u2019t know we now have that, but we do – the PillCam<\/strong>! <\/p>\n\n\n\n As I was reading this article, the song, In The Year 2525<\/strong> <\/em>by Zager & Evans,<\/strong> which came out in 1969<\/strong>, ran through my mind. Those not familiar with the song, and that might be most of you, as they were a one-hit wonder and the song described a dystopian<\/strong> world, as they warned about a future where unchecked technology<\/strong> led to human obsolescence and eventual extinction. It predicted total automation<\/strong>, chemical mind control,<\/strong> lab-grown babies<\/strong>, and the physical degradation of the human body through disuse.<\/strong> It depicted humanity losing its free will, destroying the Earth and going extinct after 10,000 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n No, it wasn\u2019t a happy little tune, but just now hearing it, I couldn\u2019t help but relate it to our ever-increasing reliance on AI<\/strong> – to wit: ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, NotebookLM, Midjourney, ElevenLabs, Character.ai <\/strong>\u2013 and others. Where are we going? Where is it leading us? And WHO is leading us?<\/p>\n\n\n So, the Jetsons got some of it right, but even the great imaginations of Hanna and Barbera couldn’t have imagined where we are today, technology-wise. We can only hope that Zager & Evans<\/strong> got it totally wrong, but I have to admit that it’s a little scary right now with what AI can do.
