{"id":2569,"date":"2014-02-17T06:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-02-17T14:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=2569"},"modified":"2014-02-16T23:00:45","modified_gmt":"2014-02-17T07:00:45","slug":"samoans-vanish-from-the-face-of-the-earth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=2569","title":{"rendered":"Samoans Vanish from the Face of the Earth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Bob Sparrow<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2571\" style=\"width: 165px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/real-Samoan.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2571\" class=\" wp-image-2571 \" alt=\"real Samoan\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/real-Samoan.jpeg\" width=\"155\" height=\"116\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2571\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">No, not this Samoan<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It\u2019s February and my New Year\u2019s <strong>&#8216;diet resolution\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0was already as precarious as a politicians promise; then along comes those adorable, freckled-faced girls in green uniforms to push it completely over the precipice.\u00a0 Yes, it\u2019s <strong>Girl Scout Cookie<\/strong> time and I was first approached by those purveyors of baked goods as I came out of my local super market last week.\u00a0 I rationalize my purchase by telling myself I\u2019m supporting a good cause, and deep down I knew that I was really not going to get much thinner . . . again this year.\u00a0 So I walked up to their card table set up outside the grocery store door and pondered my options.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">I like <strong>Peanut Butter cookies<\/strong> and\u00a0<strong>Thin Mints<\/strong>, but I love the <strong>Samoans<\/strong> \u2013 those vanilla cookies topped with caramel and sprinkled with toasted coconut and laced with chocolaty stripes \u2013 they are \u2018good-bye diet\u2019 delicious!\u00a0 I said, \u201cI\u2019ll take a box of Thin Mints, a box of Peanut Butter cookies and 5 boxes of Samoans.\u201d \u00a0Yes, 5 boxes. I knew I could polish off one box by the time I drove home from the grocery store.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The next words I heard temporarily shattered my cookie-eating world.\u00a0 \u201cOK, thank you, but we don\u2019t have Samoans anymore.\u201d\u00a0 I froze <a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/all-cookies.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2575 alignright\" alt=\"all cookies\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/all-cookies.jpeg\" width=\"215\" height=\"143\" \/><\/a>and stared at this little person delivering this tragic news and started to put my wallet back in my pocket, \u201cWe now call them <strong>\u2018Caramel deLites\u2019<\/strong> \u2013 they\u2019re the same thing\u201d, she continued as she handed me a box to examine.\u00a0 I was offended on two fronts, although I tried not to show it as I knew the young lady standing and smiling in front of me with a tooth missing, had nothing to do with either. First, these cookies are not \u2018Lite\u2019 anything \u2013 a serving, which is 2 cookies about the size of a silver dollar, is 130 calories \u2013 that\u2019s more than a pint of <strong>Guinness<\/strong>! Just sayin&#8217;. \u00a0Secondly, and more importantly, are we no longer calling them Samoans because by doing so we could be offending Samoans everywhere?\u00a0 Was the name changed out of concern for being politically correct?\u00a0 Give me a break!\u00a0 What country or ethnic group would not want to have that delicious cookie named after them?!\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/who-am-I.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2573 alignleft\" alt=\"who am I\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/who-am-I-300x196.gif\" width=\"180\" height=\"118\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0I almost gave the boxes back, but I was fairly sure that the Girl Scout standing in front of me probably didn\u2019t have much to do with the name change and certainly wouldn\u2019t follow my comparing and contrasting the calories with a Guinness.\u00a0 So I tried to take the high road and paraphrased <strong>Shakespeare<\/strong> saying, &#8221; I suppose a Samoan by any other name doth taste as sweet.\u201d\u00a0 At that point the Girl Scout\u2019s mother, not knowing what her daughter was going to be subjected to next, stepped between her daughter and me and encouraged me to either buy something or move along, that there were people behind me who didn\u2019t care about the name, the calories, or Shakespeare for that matter, saying, \u201cWe\u2019re just trying to sell cookies here to send our girls to camp.\u201d \u00a0Which was code for, &#8220;Quit creeping my daughter out and either buy some cookies or get the hell out of the way.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">On my way home, while finishing off that box of Samoans (I refuse to call them \u2018Caramel de-Lites\u2019), I was thinking, about the misuse of the word \u2018Lite\u2019 in advertising as well as the hyper-sensitivity to being \u2018politically correct\u2019.\u00a0 I get it that some <strong>Native American Indians<\/strong> don\u2019t want to be a \u2018mascot\u2019 of American sports teams, but if we\u2019re insulting the Samoans by naming a cooking after products from their islands, then we need to look at changing a number of other food items if we are genuinely concerned about being politically correct\u2019. \u00a0To wit:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\">&#8211; \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 I&#8217;m sure we&#8217;ve insulted the <strong>English<\/strong> by naming a muffin after them?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 We\u2019ve certainly insulted the <strong>Brazilians<\/strong> by naming a nut after them!<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I suppose <strong>Italian pizza<\/strong> should be called \u2018Lo-Cal Mediterranean Cheese, Meat &amp; Sauces on Lite Bread\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\">&#8211; \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 Are we still insulting the <strong>Polish<\/strong> by naming a sausage after them?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 I\u2019m not sure if Scottish folks are insulted by having <strong>Scotch<\/strong> named after them \u2013 or were they named after the Scotch?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 And what about the <strong>Turkey<\/strong> sandwich?\u00a0 Oh, never mind.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\">&#8211;\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Should <strong>Maine<\/strong> lobster with drawn butter now be called \u2018Northeastern crustacean with Lite oleo\u2019<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 60px; text-align: justify;\">&#8211; \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 How about renaming\u00a0<strong>French Fries\u00a0<\/strong>\u2018Anti-American, bath-needing, sniveling, wine-sipping, bastards Fries\u2019<a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/frenchman.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2576 alignright\" alt=\"frenchman\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/frenchman-300x272.jpg\" width=\"180\" height=\"163\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/frenchman-300x272.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/frenchman.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 180px) 100vw, 180px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;
