id=\"caption-attachment-2616\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hana, Maui<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As I pulled onto main street in <strong>\u2018downtown\u2019 Hana<\/strong>; OK, there is only one street in downtown Hana, actually there is barely even a downtown Hana, I dropped off <strong>Kristen<\/strong> and headed down to Hana Bay to eat the picnic lunch that I had packed.\u00a0 As I gnawed on some dead chicken and gazed at the picturesque crescent beach, I started turning over in my mind the story that Kristen had told me about <strong>Carly Scott\u2019s<\/strong> disappearance and put together another scenario of why Kristen was out on the road hitchhiking.\u00a0 Perhaps Kristen had been seeing Carly\u2019s old boyfriend, <strong>Steve Cabobianco<\/strong>, and when she learned that Carly was carrying his baby and feared they might be getting back together again, <i>she .<\/i> . . made her disappear. \u00a0So now I wondered if I had aided and abetted a criminal and was now a \u2018person of interest\u2019 in the on-going investigation. \u00a0Either that or someone had put a <strong>hallucinogenic<\/strong> in my chicken. \u00a0On further contemplation, the hallucinogenic chicken theory makes more sense.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2615\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Hamoa-Beach.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2615\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2615 \" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Hamoa-Beach-300x99.jpeg\" alt=\"Hamoa Beach\" width=\"300\" height=\"99\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2615\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hamoa Beach<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">My first couple of stops heading out on the \u2018road passed Hana\u2019 were at two spectacular beaches \u2013 <strong>Koki<\/strong> and <strong>Hamoa<\/strong> \u2013 they were un-crowded and pristine, right out of <strong><i>South Pacific<\/i><\/strong>;<i> <\/i>in fact <strong>James Michener<\/strong>, called them the most beautiful beaches in the south Pacific even though they are in the north Pacific.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2617\" style=\"width: 215px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/7-Pools.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2617\" class=\" wp-image-2617 \" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/7-Pools.jpeg\" alt=\"7 Pools\" width=\"205\" height=\"128\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2617\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Seven Pools with Hippos<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0<strong>Haleakala<\/strong> is the <strong>10,000-foot dormant volcano<\/strong>, which from the top several years ago my daughter, <strong>Dana<\/strong> and I saw a beautiful sunrise and then bicycled down the mountain.\u00a0 <strong>Haleakala State Park<\/strong> goes from the peak down to the beautiful shoreline in front of me, where numerous waterfalls and the <strong>Seven Pools<\/strong> are located.\u00a0 Actually they used to be called the <strong>Seven <i>Sacred <\/i>Pools<\/strong> until no one could answer the question as to why they were sacred.\u00a0 To me they looked like a <strong>hippo watering hole<\/strong> at feeding time as the pools were filled with large, over-weight tourists detracting from the otherwise beautiful waterfalls and pools.\u00a0 I quickly moved on.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u00a0Next stop was famous American aviator, <strong>Charles Lindbergh\u2019s gravesite<\/strong>, located just up the road on the beautifully <strong>jagged Kipahulu coast<\/strong>.\u00a0 When faced with cancer in 1968, rather than take treatment on the mainland, Lindbergh chose to live out his remaining years here \u2013 he died in 1974.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Just passed Lindbergh\u2019s gravesite the road changes from a narrow, single lane, partly paved, bumpy, unmaintained road to <a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/unpaved-road-to-Hana.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2618 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/unpaved-road-to-Hana.jpeg\" alt=\"unpaved road to Hana\" width=\"233\" height=\"175\" \/><\/a>a narrow, single lane, unpaved, unmaintained, crushed lava carriageway.\u00a0 It was here I was expecting to see the<strong> <i>\u2018Dead End, Turn Around\u2019<\/i><\/strong> and <i>\u2018<strong>No Rental Cars Permitted Beyond This Point\u2019<\/strong><\/i> signs but, \u201cHonestly officer, I never saw them.\u201d\u00a0 If you came across another car coming from the other direction, which I did only once, I had to back up to the nearest wide spot in the road so they could pass.\u00a0 As reward for the demanding drive, the scene in front of me of black lava, contrasting with the green vegetation and the blue water crashing against the coastline was so amazing.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2619\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Kaupo-Gen-Store.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2619\" class=\" wp-image-2619 \" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/03\/Kaupo-Gen-Store.jpeg\" alt=\"Kaupo Gen Store\" width=\"240\" height=\"134\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2619\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kaupo General Store<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">After several miles, where the only building I saw was a <strong>solitary church<\/strong>, I got back to what is termed as \u2018rough paved road\u2019 and \u2018civilization\u2019 which consisted only of <strong>Kaupo General Store<\/strong>, sitting all by itself along this desolate road.\u00a0 I purchased a pineapple-coconut shave ice and stood alone on a small rise next to the road and looked at the miles of grassland, actually grazing farmland for horses and cattle, all the way down to the black lava coastline where there were several energy-producing windmills.\u00a0 If you\u2019re ever looking for peace, quiet and solitude, this is the place.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As the crushed lava trail I was traveling on turned into a paved two-lane road, I saw two cars ahead of me and several tourists standing by the roadside posing for pictures and I knew the adventure on and passed the road to Hana was over.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Update: As of this writing there is still no new news on the whereabouts of Carly
