An hour and a half&#8217;s drive away, bucolic-sounding <strong>Apple Valley<\/strong> is located at the southern end of the <strong>Mojave Desert<\/strong> at an elevation of nearly 3,000 feet and is considered \u2018high desert\u2019 \u2013 apples are no longer grown there. The historic\u00a0<strong>\u2018Route 66\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0winds through the area, but the quiet, pot-holed streets and boarded up shops would indicate that very few are still <strong>\u2018getting their kicks on Route 66\u2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interstate 15<\/strong>\u00a0now runs adjacent to \u00a0<strong>Apple Valley<\/strong>\u00a0and I rarely traverse it without thinking of <strong>Roy Rogers<\/strong> (It\u2019s on the way to <strong>Vegas<\/strong>, so I\u2019ve made the trip a few times!). \u00a0In the late 40s and through out the 50s Roy was a staple in the movies and on TV and helped popularize the musical Western. \u00a0Roy and wife, <strong>Dale Evans<\/strong>, who had long careers in movies and on TV, retired in the mid-80s to their ranch in <strong>Apple Valley,\u00a0<\/strong>which was home to the first\u00a0<strong>Roy Rogers<\/strong> <strong>Museum<\/strong>, which contained artifacts from his movies and TV show, including Roy\u2019s horse,<strong> Trigger,<\/strong> who was stuffed and placed in the museum.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3769\" style=\"width: 150px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/andy.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3769\" class=\"wp-image-3769 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/andy-140x150.jpeg\" alt=\"andy\" width=\"140\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3769\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Andy Devine<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_3768\" style=\"width: 185px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/gabby.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3768\" class=\"wp-image-3768\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/gabby-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"gabby\" width=\"175\" height=\"198\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3768\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gabby Hayes<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Most everyone in my generation idolized <strong>Roy Rogers<\/strong> and <strong>Dale Evans<\/strong> and got to know his many sidekicks who provided comic relief; <strong>Pat Brady<\/strong>, who drove a Jeep named <strong>\u2018Nellybelle\u2019<\/strong>, <strong>Andy Devine<\/strong> and <strong>George \u2018Gabby\u2019 Hayes<\/strong>, who both had voices that made you wince and faces for radio. We also became acquainted with Roy\u2019s faithful German Shepard, <strong>Bullet<\/strong>. \u00a0Rogers and his entourage appeared in over 100 films and had top rated radio and TV shows in the 40s and 50s.<\/p>\n<p>Roy was born <strong>Leonard Slye<\/strong> (a name Hollywood had to change!) in <strong>Ohio<\/strong> and quit high school at 15 to work in the family shoe factory. The family moved to <strong>California<\/strong> during the <strong>Great Depression<\/strong>\u00a0where Roy worked driving truck and picking fruit. He was always interested in singing and yodeling and worked with several bands over the years until he and a friend formed a group that became the\u00a0<strong>\u2018Sons of the Pioneers\u2019<\/strong> and ultimately signed a record deal. In 1935, Roy\u2019s good looks landed him his first bit part in a <strong>Gene Autry<\/strong> movie. \u00a0Three years later, when Autry was demanding more money (probably saving up to buy the <strong>California Angels<\/strong>!) the lead part was offered to Roy and he was on his way to becoming a matinee idol.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RR-SoP.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-3758 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RR-SoP-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"RR &amp; SoP\" width=\"205\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RR-SoP-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RR-SoP-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RR-SoP.jpg 355w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 205px) 100vw, 205px\" \/><\/a>Roy always wore a white hat that never came off during a fight while he was knocking out the bad guys, in black hats, with one punch. Towards the end of each movie or tv\/radio episode, after he\u2019d righted all the wrongs, he would pick up his guitar and sing a song, often accompanied by <strong>Dale<\/strong> and his back-up group, <strong>The Sons of the Pioneers<\/strong>, whose songs can still be purchased on <strong>iTunes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dale<\/strong> was a story unto herself; born <strong>Francis Smith<\/strong>\u00a0in <strong>Texas<\/strong>, she was married at 14 and divorced with a child at 16, yet continued to pursue her singing career. Her marriage to Roy, his second and her fourth, lasted 51 years, until his death. She wrote their theme song, <em>Happy Trails<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>He was dubbed, \u2018King of the Cowboys\u2019, she, \u2018Queen of the West\u2019.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3757\" style=\"width: 276px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Roy-Dale.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3757\" class=\"wp-image-3757 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/Roy-Dale.jpeg\" alt=\"Roy &amp; Dale\" width=\"266\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3757\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Roy Rogers &amp; Dale Evans<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Roy died in 1998 and Dale three years later. \u00a0They are now both interned at the Sunset Hills Memorial Park . . . in Apple Valley.<\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;re ever passing by Apple Valley and want to visit the museum . . . the original Roy Rogers museum was erected in 1967 in an old bowling alley in Apple Valley, it moved to a bigger building in neighboring Victorville in 1976.
