\"M<\/a>No, this isn\u2019t about\u00a0how\u00a0billionaire, Warren<\/strong>\u00a0would invest your money, but rather about another Buffett,\u00a0one\u00a0who has a decent net worth\u00a0himself\u00a0\u2013 somewhere north of $450 million<\/strong> – and invests so little in his concert attire that he doesn\u2019t even wear shoes.\u00a0 Yes, I\u2019m talking about\u00a0Jimmy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

I got a chance to see Mr. Buffett<\/strong> for the umpteenth time two weeks ago in the Hollywood Bowl and once again\u00a0came away totally entertained by this man whose voice\u00a0has been likened to that of a carnival barker.\u00a0\u00a0So what is the attraction you ask?\u00a0\u00a0A little history is probably in order . . .<\/p>\n

I was turned on to Buffett\u2019s music by my late, great best friend, Don Klapperich<\/strong>, back in the 80s when he was in Saudi Arabia<\/strong>,\u00a0and prior to the\u00a0common use of the\u00a0Internet, we regularly \u00a0communicated\u00a0by exchanging cassette tapes filled with music and patter.\u00a0 Like most casual fans of music, I was familiar with\u00a0the songs\u00a0Margaritaville<\/em><\/strong> and Come Monday<\/strong><\/em>, but probably couldn\u2019t have told you who sang them.\u00a0 Don sent me a Buffett song called Somewhere Over China<\/strong><\/em>, a song with interesting lyrics that I asked him about,\u00a0which apparently was\u00a0his cue to start sending me more Buffett.\u00a0 He did, and implored me to listen to the philosophical lyrics.<\/p>\n

Philosophical lyrics?!!<\/strong>\u00a0 To me, and perhaps to most casual fan of Jimmy, philosophy and Buffett didn\u2019t seem to go together \u2013 what deep meaning or life lesson was I supposed to garner from \u201cwastin\u2019 away again in Margaritaville\u201d<\/strong> or \u201chaving a cheeseburger in paradise\u201d?<\/strong>\u00a0 But between the songs Don sent me and the ones I subsequently purchased, I started to learn and appreciate the \u2018Buffett philosophy\u2019<\/strong>. \u00a0Now don\u2019t get me wrong, he\u2019s no Confucius<\/strong> or Descartes<\/strong>, but he is<\/em> a fairly accomplished individual.<\/p>\n

At 68, Jimmy not only still plays over 20 U.S. concert dates<\/strong> and several foreign locales each summer, but he is the head of a juggernaut business enterprise.\u00a0 He has turned the brand \u2018Margaritaville\u2019<\/strong> into resorts, casinos, restaurants, clothing and record labels, tequila and more. \u00a0You can thank Jimmy if you\u2019re ever had a Landshark Beer<\/strong> in a Cheeseburger in Paradise<\/strong> restaurant. He\u2019s written numerous books and appears frequently on TV and in movies, and does a ton of charity work.\u00a0 He\u2019s a veteran pilot who occasionally \u2018buzzes\u2019 his concert parking lots, which are filled with partying Parrotheads<\/strong>, prior to his concerts in his seaplane, the \u2018Hemisphere Dancer\u2019<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

So here\u2019s a primer of his philosophy from the songs and books of this Renaissance man . . .<\/p>\n

On a general philosophy of life . . .<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cSearching is half the fun: life is much more manageable when thought of as a scavenger hunt as opposed to a surprise party. \u201d<\/p>\n

On staying young and living life in the \u2018now\u2019 and not worrying about how you\u2019re thought of after you die . . .<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m growing older, but not up, my metabolic rate is pleasantly stuck, let those winds of time blow over my head, I\u2019d rather die while I\u2019m living than live when I\u2019m dead\u201d<\/p>\n

On self-inspection . . .<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are the people our parents warned us about\u201d<\/p>\n

On keeping a good attitude when life brings changes . . .<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s those changes in attitudes, changes in latitudes, nothing remains quite the same. \u00a0For all of our running and all of our cunning, if we couldn’t laugh and if we weren\u2019t all crazy, we would all go insane\u201d<\/p>\n

On being in the right place with the wrong person . . .<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThrough 86 years of perpetual motion, if he likes you he\u2019ll smile and he\u2019ll say, some of it\u2019s magic, some of it\u2019s tragic, but I had a good life all the way.<\/p>\n

On rationalizing a drink before the cocktail hour . . .<\/strong><\/p>\n

“It’s 5 o’clock somewhere”<\/p>\n

From the mouth of Buffett . . .<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe’re all somewhere over China, heading east or heading west.”<\/p>\n

“Yes I am a pirate, 200 years too late.”<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the phone doesn’t ring, it’s me.\u201d<\/p>\n

I will admit that most of his philosophical stuff gives way to Fins<\/strong>, Cheeseburgers,<\/strong>\u00a0Volcanos<\/strong>\u00a0and Margaritas<\/strong>\u00a0during his concerts, and that’s OK, as having a good time is a very big part of Buffett’s philosophy, but in a rare quiet moment, I still enjoy putting in an old cassette tape and listening to Don introduce a philosophical Buffett song.<\/p>\n
