Fields<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=6726\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6726\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6726 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/sideways-300x117.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"117\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/sideways-300x117.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/sideways.jpeg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Please pardon any split infinitives and dangling modifiers this week as there may be some residual sugar in my bloodstream having just returned from a tour of <strong>Central Coast wineries<\/strong> with some neighborhood winos \u2013 so I\u2019m feeling a little <em><strong>Sideways<\/strong>. <\/em><\/p>\n<p><u>Day 1<\/u><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6727\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=6727\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6727\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6727\" class=\"wp-image-6727 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Jack-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6727\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wine Capt. Jack Sparrow<\/p><\/div>\n<p>First stop was a visit with brother Jack at the <strong>Fess Parker Winery<\/strong>, established in 1988 when Fess bought 714 acres on what is now the <strong>Foxen Canyon Wine Trail<\/strong> in <strong>Los Olivos<\/strong>, he originally planned to run cattle, but grapes proved to be a bit more profitable. Jack did a great job of weaving stories about his friendship with Fess Parker around the pouring of some excellent wines.<\/p>\n<p>Off to <strong>San Luis Obispo<\/strong>, but not before stopping at the iconic <strong>Madonna Inn<\/strong>, built in 1958 with unique architecture in each room and a giant waterfall as the men\u2019s urinal.<\/p>\n<p>Dinner in downtown SLO where every Thursday night they have the main street walled off for a farmer\u2019s market and on this evening we saw the precursor of the up-coming holiday as many of the citizenry were regaled in Halloween attire. We enjoyed outside dining at <strong>Novo<\/strong>, a creek side restaurant on the main street.<\/p>\n<p><u>Day 2<\/u><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6728\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=6728\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6728\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6728\" class=\"wp-image-6728 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Gary-Conway-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Gary-Conway-150x150.jpeg 150w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Gary-Conway.jpeg 224w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6728\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gary Conway<\/p><\/div>\n<div id=\"attachment_6729\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=6729\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6729\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6729\" class=\"wp-image-6729 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/M.-MacKnight-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6729\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Marian McKnight<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After a night in SLO we\u2019re off in the morning to Paso Robles for some \u2018breakfast wine\u2019; first stop <strong>Turley Winery<\/strong>, founded by former <strong>emergency room physician<\/strong> Larry Turley in 1993. They make 28 separate wines, mostly Zinfandel and Petite Syrah, but also a white wine,\u00a0<strong>\u2018White Coat\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0named after his doctor&#8217;s frock.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Carmody-McKnight<\/strong> \u2013 Our next stop provides an interesting story of the owners. He was an accomplished artist, concert violinist, architect, actor (stared in Burke\u2019s Law and several other tv shows and several movies) and screenwriter; <strong>Gary Conway<\/strong>, born Gareth Monello Carmody. His wife, <strong>Marian McKnight Conway<\/strong> was her high school valedictorian, graduated Magna Cum Laude and was <strong>Miss America in 1957<\/strong>. Together they became winemakers when Gary saw the idyllic beauty of this mountain valley aboard a helicopter moments before it crashed. Emerging from the wreckage, Gary dusted himself off and promptly announced to the real estate broker, \u201cI\u2019m going to buy this place\u201d. Their story, in my opinion, was more interesting than their wine, but the winery provided a picturesque setting for our picnic lunch.<\/p>\n<p>On to <strong>Adelaida Winery<\/strong>, a producer of grape varieties from the Rhone Valley in the south of France, but a fairly <a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=6731\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6731\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-6731 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Daou-300x109.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"109\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Daou-300x109.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Daou.jpg 716w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>unremarkable winery especially when we compared it to our next stop \u2013 <strong>Daou Winery<\/strong>. While we didn\u2019t taste the wine there, which is delicious, the view from the tasting room was nothing short of spectacular.<\/p>\n<p>Dinner at an Italian restaurant in Paso Robles with, of course, a little wine, OK maybe more than a little.<\/p>\n<p><u>Day 2<\/u><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tobin James Winery<\/strong> \u2013 In 1987 when a young Toby James was an assistant winemaker at a local winery that had 6 tons of <a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=6730\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-6730\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-6730 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Tobin-James.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Tobin-James.jpeg 225w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/Tobin-James-150x150.jpeg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>grapes that it could not process, he asked if he could have it to make some homemade wine. The owner said, <strong>&#8220;Sure kid, knock yourself out\u201d<\/strong>. In a year and a half Tobin (He was now called Tobin instead of Toby), leveraging his last name as being the same of the famous outlaw brothers, created a western theme by purchasing a building on the site of an old stagecoach stop and brought in an 1860s western bar in the tasting room, imported from Missouri and rumored to have a <strong>bullet hole<\/strong> in it from the days of <strong>Frank and Jesse James<\/strong>, although I was not able to confirm that, it does make for a good story.\u00a0\u00a0 We bought a lot of wine here and many of us joined the wine club, which, at 35,000 club members, is the largest wine club in the (Pick one) Central Coast, California, U.S., world.<\/p>\n<p>After spending several hours there, we decided we should probably eat something, so we had another picnic on the grounds of Tobin James.<\/p>\n<p>We visited two more wineries that afternoon, <strong>La Vigne<\/strong>, which I thought had better <strong>cheese<\/strong> than wine and <strong>Via Vega<\/strong>, which was in its <strong>\u2018Day of the Dead\u2019<\/strong> mode, an annual event where people bring in pictures of friends and relatives who have passed and . . . I\u2019m not sure what happens, drink wine I guess.\u00a0\u00a0 By this time we were pretty much <strong>\u2018wined out\u2019<\/strong> and after some rest and relaxation at the hotel we went to an Irish Pub, <strong>Pappy McGregor&#8217;s<\/strong> and had some beer with dinner!<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re headed up to the Central Coast for some wine tasting any time soon, don&#8217;t miss <strong>Fess Parker, Daou <\/strong>and<strong> Tobin James.<\/strong> Cheers!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Bob Sparrow \u201cI\u00a0cook with wine, sometimes I even add it to the food\u201d\u00a0 \u00a0 W.C.
