My flight over to Hawaii on economy airline, \u2018Pan Chance\u2019 was highlighted by sitting next to a family with two whining, snot-nosed, germ-infested kids, while the flight home was a relaxing \u2018red eye\u2019 in\u00a0one of those\u00a0oh-so-comfortable, non-reclining coach seats in the very last row – if\u00a0I\u00a0had been\u00a0any further back in the airplane I would have been handing out toilet paper.<\/p>\n
The conference was at the beautiful Kaua’i\u00a0Marriott, where I only saw the inside of the vendors’ hall, but I did buy\u00a0a postcard in the airport of the beautiful Grand Hyatt Kaua’i shown below.<\/p>\n
I didn’t stay at either of those hotels, I\u00a0stayed at the Mano Kalanipo,<\/p>\n which was not so beautiful.\u00a0 <\/span>I was to learn later that \u2018Mano kalanipo\u2019 is Hawaiian for \u2018Where Rats Come to Play\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n I should have known it wasn’t a first class hotel when a chicken showed me to my room . . .<\/p>\n and the bathroom was \u2018out back\u2019<\/p>\n My hotel was several miles from the conference hotel, but I got a good deal on a\u00a0vehicle from Toro Truck Rental<\/p>\n We were late in signing up for the conference, so they squeezed us in at the last minute.\u00a0 Here is a booth from one of the other vendors at the conference<\/span><\/p>\n Here is\u00a0my \u2018booth\u2019 . . . really!<\/p>\n It was like being back at the \u2018kid\u2019s table\u2019 at Thanksgiving<\/span><\/p>\n Here is a typical booth banner<\/p>\n Here is my booth \u2018banner\u2019 . . . really!<\/p>\n But I remembered what my old college education professor, Dr. Telecky, told our class, \u201cIf you\u2019re a good teacher, you can teach in a barn.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span>I thought he said \u2018bar\u2019 and well, it\u2019s perhaps why I\u2019m not teaching any longer, but that\u2019s another story; the point is I was determined to make the best of this bad situation.<\/span>\u00a0 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n I was going to overcome all the odds and show my boss that I was there to work – no ‘just hang loose’ for this guy.\u00a0 As documentation for my Spartanesque time in Hawaii, I attached the following pictures and narrative to my expense report:<\/p>\n Here\u00a0I am not lounging by the pool<\/p>\n Nope, you won’t find me taking a refreshing dip in the pool either\u00a0– kids have probably been peeing in it all day<\/p>\n That’s\u00a0me not tanning myself on the beach – because I fully understand and appreciate the harm that ultra violet rays can cause to the skin<\/span><\/p>\n Here’s a picture of me not\u00a0renting one of\u00a0those stupid\u00a0outriggers\u00a0– it’s probably like riding\u00a0a bike with training wheels<\/span><\/p>\n And don’t look for me having\u00a0one of those over-priced\u00a0mai\u00a0tais at\u00a0a\u00a0cute little\u00a0tiki bar – I hear they don’t\u00a0put any booze in those things anyway<\/span><\/p>\n Here I am\u00a0not\u00a0getting a table\u00a0at one of those\u00a0open-air, beach-side restaurants – if I wanted to eat outside I’d go camping<\/p>\n No, you’ll find me\u00a0inside talking to a real Hawaiians about real business<\/p>\n How did I do?\u00a0 <\/span>Time will tell, but I\u2019m going to stay away from the boss for a while until the tan I didn\u2019t get goes away. <\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" by Bob Sparrow Two weeks ago I had to go to Hawaii to attend a conference for work.\u00a0 Economic times being what they are, I was asked to keep the expenses down, which I did.
