{"id":7276,"date":"2018-05-21T09:00:36","date_gmt":"2018-05-21T16:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=7276"},"modified":"2018-05-20T12:56:20","modified_gmt":"2018-05-20T19:56:20","slug":"irish-castles-and-some-tips","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=7276","title":{"rendered":"CASTLES, CUISINE, AND A CAUTION"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Suzanne Sparrow Watson<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7279\" style=\"width: 385px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7279\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7279 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/muckross.jpg\" alt=\"muckross\" width=\"375\" height=\"237\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/muckross.jpg 375w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/muckross-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7279\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Muckross House<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">All good things <strong>must come to an end,<\/strong> as some wise person once said.\u00a0 But that doesn&#8217;t mean that they can&#8217;t come to an end in style.\u00a0 As we departed Killarney we headed off to <strong>Dromoland Castle<\/strong>, where we planned to live like the princesses we are on our final night in Ireland.\u00a0 Dromoland, however, was not the only castle that we saw on our trip.\u00a0 In fact, like most countries that have a long history, Ireland is full of castles.\u00a0 Most of them are ruins and we saw many instances of crumbling rock.\u00a0 But there were a few exceptions worth noting.\u00a0 First off, is <strong>Muckross House<\/strong>, which technically is not a castle but did house <strong>Queen Victoria<\/strong> for a couple of nights in 1861.\u00a0 It has spectacular grounds and gardens, sitting right on the lakes of Killarney.\u00a0 Our guide, Jack told us that in the late 1850&#8217;s the owner of Muckross House, Henry Arthur Herbert, spent a fortune prepping the house for Queen Victoria&#8217;s visit on the implied agreement that he would receive a Dukedom for his efforts.\u00a0 Unfortunately, the Queen&#8217;s husband, Prince Albert, died just three months after her visit and she forgot entirely about Herbert.\u00a0 By 1897 the estate was in financial ruin that is partially attributed to the money spent on the Queen&#8217;s visit.\u00a0 I guess even then it paid to get things in writing.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7285\" style=\"width: 228px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7285\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7285\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018-05-03-13.09.02-Small-e1526505578390.jpg\" alt=\"2018-05-03 13.09.02 (Small)\" width=\"218\" height=\"387\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018-05-03-13.09.02-Small-e1526505578390.jpg 480w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018-05-03-13.09.02-Small-e1526505578390-169x300.jpg 169w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 218px) 100vw, 218px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7285\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Bunratty Castle<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>On our way to Dromoland we stopped at <strong>Bunratty Castle and Folk Park<\/strong>.\u00a0 The &#8216;folk park&#8217; part of the title should have been our first clue that the fine people at Bunratty have figured out how to make a buck.\u00a0 I wonder if they&#8217;re Americans?\u00a0 The original castle was built in 1277 but the structure that still stands is a relative newcomer, erected in 1455.\u00a0 It is said that <strong>William Penn<\/strong>&#8216;s father defended the garrison in 1646 as William lay in his crib inside the fortress.\u00a0 Who knows where Pennsylvania would be today if his father had been defeated?\u00a0 The folk part consists of many structures that were chosen from many different areas of Ireland to form a collection of typical 19th century buildings including the School, Doctor\u2019s house, Pub, Printworks, Grocery, etc.\u00a0 It was enlightening to see how primitively they lived &#8211; two rooms for a large family with more room for the horses than the children set aside within the house.\u00a0 The gift shop at Bunratty is a money-maker &#8211; really one of the nicest gift shops we saw so we all were calculating just how much more we could squeeze into our suitcases.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7286\" style=\"width: 365px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7286\" class=\"wp-image-7286 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018-05-03-16.53.04-Small.jpg\" alt=\"2018-05-03 16.53.04 (Small)\" width=\"355\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018-05-03-16.53.04-Small.jpg 853w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018-05-03-16.53.04-Small-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018-05-03-16.53.04-Small-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 355px) 100vw, 355px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7286\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>The bar at Dromoland Castle<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Finally we arrived at <strong>Dromoland Castle<\/strong>, our lodging for the night.\u00a0 The castle grounds have been the home of castles for centuries but the current structure was built in 1800.\u00a0 It has been preserved with little change since the mid-19th century. In 1962, Donough O&#8217;Brien, the sixteenth Baron Inchiquin, sold Dromoland Castle to American <strong>Bernard P. McDonough<\/strong> who converted it into a luxurious hotel.\u00a0 The luscious green gardens and golf course line the entry and we looked forward to exploring the pathways that meander throughout the property.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7295\" style=\"width: 327px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7295\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7295\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Dromoland-dinner.jpg\" alt=\"Dromoland dinner\" width=\"317\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Dromoland-dinner.jpg 3123w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Dromoland-dinner-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Dromoland-dinner-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/Dromoland-dinner-1024x576.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 317px) 100vw, 317px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7295\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>The Last Supper<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Unfortunately our Irish luck on weather that had blessed us all week let us down &#8211; it was <strong>pouring rain<\/strong>.\u00a0 The weather, coupled with the fact that our room wasn&#8217;t ready, led us to repair to the lounge where they provided us with coffee and pastries.\u00a0 Once settled into our beautiful room we hoped for sunnier skies but, alas, it was still raining so&#8230;what&#8217;s a girl to do? We checked out the bar.\u00a0 It was everything an elegant bar should be and was the perfect setting on a gloomy day to continue our lager\/Irish whiskey taste testing.\u00a0 Dinner was in the<strong> Earl of Thomand<\/strong> dining room, again elegant and intimate with service beyond compare and delectable food.\u00a0 What a way to end the trip of a lifetime &#8211; beautiful scenery, wonderful cuisine and lasting friendships.<\/p>\n<p>The next day we left for the Shannon airport at 6 a.m. and from there flew to London.\u00a0 Twenty-one and a half hours later I was greeted at my front door by <strong>Dash the Wonder Dog.<\/strong>\u00a0 Ireland was great, but so was coming home.<\/p>\n<p>I know several people going to Ireland this year so in the spirit of sharing, here are my recommendations:<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Killarney Park Hotel:<\/strong>\u00a0 This hotel is the only five-star hotel in Killarney and it&#8217;s easy to see how they gained their reputation.\u00a0 The friendliness of the staff is beyond any I&#8217;ve ever experienced.\u00a0 By our second day there they knew us by name and always went out of their way to help us.\u00a0 The food and grounds are also magnificent.\u00a0 You cannot go wrong at this hotel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Killarney Tour and Taxi:<\/strong>\u00a0 Jack Hayden is the owner of this business and his five stars on Trip Advisor are well deserved.\u00a0 He is humorous, knowledgeable and a native of Kerry so he really knows his stuff.\u00a0 He figured out very quickly that we did not want to see every church and cliff so he would slow down, we&#8217;d open a window, snap a photo, and off we went.\u00a0 At times he insisted that we visit some historical sites and afterwards we were always glad he had. Besides his knowledge and humor, how can you go wrong with a guy who played &#8220;Red Solo Cup&#8221; so we could sing along?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Guerin&#8217;s Path to Cliff Walk:\u00a0<\/strong> As mentioned in my first Ireland post, Martin Guerin is a farmer who owns land that includes the visitors path at the Cliffs of Mohr.\u00a0 Read my first post to learn more about it, but all I can say is his personal tour beats the Visitor&#8217;s Center hands down.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Celtic Whiskey Bar and Larder and Sheehan&#8217;s Pub<\/strong> are both terrific places to visit.\u00a0 If you are lucky enough to be in Sheehan&#8217;s on a Saturday night you will most likely experience several &#8220;hen parties&#8221;, which only add to the experience.\u00a0 Irish people are friendly and like to drag us into their shenanigans!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mobile Passport App<\/strong>: \u00a0 We were advised by our travel agent to download the app and it was some of the best advice we got.\u00a0 We had pre-loaded it with our passport information and once we were taxiing to the gate in Phoenix we activated the passport clearance feature and we were through Passport Control in less than a minute.\u00a0 It also came in handy as we passed the\u00a0<del>Gestapo<\/del> agent at customs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Diet:\u00a0<\/strong> Okay, not really a recommendation but more of a caution.\u00a0 I was horrified when I got on the scale the day after my return.\u00a0 Unfortunately, my eating and drinking in Ireland closely resembled the hog we saw at Bunratty Castle.\u00a0 Oh well, I&#8217;ve got all summer to work the Guinness off my thighs.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<style type=\"text\/css\">\n\t\t\t#gallery-1 {\n\t\t\t\tmargin: auto;\n\t\t\t}\n\t\t\t#gallery-1 .gallery-item {\n\t\t\t\tfloat: left;\n\t\t\t\tmargin-top: 10px;\n\t\t\t\ttext-align: center;\n\t\t\t\twidth: 50%;\n\t\t\t}\n\t\t\t#gallery-1 img {\n\t\t\t\tborder: 2px solid #cfcfcf;\n\t\t\t}\n\t\t\t#gallery-1 .gallery-caption {\n\t\t\t\tmargin-left: 0;\n\t\t\t}\n\t\t\t\/* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes\/media.php *\/\n\t\t<\/style>\n\t\t<div id='gallery-1' class='gallery galleryid-7276 gallery-columns-2 gallery-size-thumbnail'><dl class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<dt class='gallery-icon portrait'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=7278'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG955474-Small-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/dt><\/dl><dl class='gallery-item'>\n\t\t\t<dt class='gallery-icon landscape'>\n\t\t\t\t<a href='https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=7284'><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/2018-05-03-13.01.01-Small-150x150.jpg\" class=\"attachment-thumbnail size-thumbnail\" alt=\"\" \/><\/a>\n\t\t\t<\/dt><\/dl><br style=\"clear: both\" \/>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Suzanne Sparrow Watson All good things must come to an end, as some wise person once said.\u00a0 But that doesn&#8217;t mean that they can&#8217;t come to an end in style.\u00a0 As we departed Killarney we headed off to Dromoland &hellip;
