<\/a>Bridge to Nowhere<\/p><\/div>\n
Summer brings me this year\u2019s edition of Westways Backyard Bucket List <\/strong><\/em>just in time, as I was running out of places to take you. So let\u2019s see what new and exciting things there are to do in SoCal this summer.<\/p>\n -\u2018Bungee Jump off a Bridge\u2019<\/strong> \u2013 It starts off with \u201cHike 5 miles into the Angeles National Forest (and you thought there were only freeways in Los Angeles) to the \u2018Bridge to Nowhere\u2019,<\/strong> which presumably inspired our governor to build a \u2018Bullet Train to Nowhere\u2019.<\/strong> \u00a0In the photo shown, due to recent droughts, the bridge no longer spans any water, so if something should go awry with the bungee, you don\u2019t just fall and get wet, you hit the granite riverbed and die. I think I’ll pass on this one.<\/p>\n – Visit the old abandoned zoo at Griffith Park<\/strong> \u2013 This zoo has not been operational since 1966, but we are told that it once attracted millions of guests. That\u2019s great, if you were here in 1966, but what is there to do now? \u2018Visitors can climb behind graffiti-covered metal cages and hike up deserted rock enclosures\u2019.<\/strong>\u00a0Yeah, that would be so much more fun than going to a zoo that has actual animals?\u00a0 While you’re at it, since it\u2019s not too far, maybe you could stop by Dodger Stadium when the Dodgers are out of town.\u00a0 Check please!<\/p>\n –Experience the Bakersfield Sound<\/strong> \u2013 I thought Bakersfield was in Texas; I guess it just wished it -Stop for a \u2018Bucket List Burger\u2019<\/strong> \u2013 What better way to take a break from completing my \u2018bucket list\u2019 list than to visit \u2018Bucket List Burgers’<\/strong> in Riverside<\/strong>. I checked out the menu on line (the New Year\u2019s Resolution Burger<\/strong> looks awesome, I’m getting it, even though it\u2019s the middle of summer), I got directions and with my mouth watering, noticed that it was . . .\u00a0closed<\/strong> for good! Apparently they weren\u2019t on very many bucket lists.\u00a0 Scratch.<\/p>\n -Visit Elvis\u2019s Honeymoon Hideaway<\/strong> \u2013 The Palm Springs Modern Tour<\/strong> highlights some of the area\u2019s best midcentury modern architecture, including the \u2018House of Tomorrow\u2019<\/strong> where Elvis and Priscilla<\/strong> lived for a year, until Elvis\u2019s nightstand was completely covered with half-eaten peanut butter, banana and pickle sandwiches. Elvis rented the house for a year in 1967 and the lease is framed and still hangs on the wall. The home went up for sale 3 years ago for $9.5 million<\/strong>, it didn\u2019t sell and is now back on the market for . . . $5.9 million<\/strong> \u2013 guess those peanut butter, banana and pickle sandwiches are getting a little crusty.\u00a0 No thank you very much!<\/p>\n -Visit the Original McDonalds<\/strong> \u2013 the magazine says \u201cthe \u2018unofficial\u2019<\/strong> McDonald\u2019s museum is located on Route 66<\/strong> in San Bernardino<\/strong> and provides a nostalgic peek at Golden Arches<\/strong> memorabilia.\u201d Which begs the question, \u2018Where is the \u2018official\u2019<\/strong> McDonald\u2019s museum?\u2019\u00a0\u00a0 I don\u2019t really care, since I haven\u2019t visited a McDonalds ever, I\u2019m not sure what would draw me to anything McDonalds now, unless I could get one of those plastic life-size statues of Ronald McDonald<\/strong> to put on my front lawn.\u00a0 Super size this!!<\/p>\n To be fair, the magazine did offer some destination that I\u2019ve either already visited or will visit, but my real \u2018backy<\/strong>ard\u2019<\/strong> bucket list, would start with a cool drink, some music, a spot in my own backyard<\/strong>\u00a0while imagining I\u2019m on a tropical island \u2013 it’s so much cheaper this way!<\/span><\/p>\n Happy Independence Day!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" by Bob Sparrow Summer brings me this year\u2019s edition of Westways Backyard Bucket List just in time, as I was running out of places to take you. <\/a> were. I am informed that there is nightly live music at Buck Owen\u2019s Crystal Palace,<\/strong> but there\u2019s more, you can see Buck\u2019s red, white and blue guitar. Really? No way! Yes, way and there\u2019s still more, you can see Buck\u2019s \u2018watermelon suit\u2019<\/strong> on display. Gosh, I wish it were closer, I\u2019ve always wanted to see a watermelon suit. <\/a>-And speaking of bananas, here\u2019s something I never knew even existed, the International Banana Museum<\/strong>, and it\u2019s right here in southern California, well not exactly, it\u2019s out in the desert in Mecca<\/strong>, which isn\u2019t the end of the world, but you can see it from there. This museum has over 20,000 banana-related items, some to eat. The photo at the left just makes you want to don an outfit and . . . go bananas!\u00a0 Or not!<\/p>\n
