A special <strong>\u2018Thank You!\u2019<\/strong> to <strong>Ron Erickson<\/strong>, a local Mercedes dealer, who <strong>GAVE<\/strong> us a <strong>Mercedes Sprinter<\/strong> van to use. It was awesome, as it allowed us all to ride together and annoy each other every minute of the trip.<\/p>\n<p>First stop, <strong>Alisal\u2019s Ranch<\/strong> golf course, just outside the quaint Danish town of <strong>Solvang<\/strong>. The course was beautiful and well managed, unlike my golf game, which was ugly and mismanaged, but beautiful white oak trees provided plenty of shade on this warm summer afternoon and the cold beer at the end of the round tasted particularly good. Fortunately I still know how to play the 19<sup>th<\/sup> hole very well!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7497\" style=\"width: 260px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7497\" class=\"wp-image-7497\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Solvang-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Solvang-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Solvang.jpg 598w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7497\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Solvang<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We tried to get into <strong>\u2018The Hitching Post<\/strong>\u2019 for dinner, a<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">restaurant made famous by the classic movie, <\/span><strong style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\"><em>Sideways<\/em><\/strong><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">, but we ended up eating at another well-known restaurant in <\/span><strong style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">Santa Ynez, The Brother\u2019s Red Barn<\/strong><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\"> &#8211; excellent beef and seafood in rustic surround<\/span><span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">ings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><u>Sunday<\/u> \u2013 Up early for breakfast at <strong>Paula\u2019s Pancake House<\/strong> in tourist-filled <strong>Solvang<\/strong>, then golf at the <strong>River course in Alisal<\/strong>. Scores are not important, although I should mentioned that I<a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=7496\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7496\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-7496 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Fish-Gaucho-150x150.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> once again played the 19<sup>th<\/sup> hole particularly well. The evening was spent on <strong>\u2018The Square\u2019<\/strong> in <strong>Paso Robles<\/strong> \u2013 a spot filled with great watering holes and restaurants. We ate at what was clearly the most popular restaurant in town, based on the waiting time on a Sunday night, <strong>Fish Gaucho<\/strong>, which loosely translates to \u2018Fish Cowboy\u2019 \u2013 excellent food, service and ambiance.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7492\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=7492\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7492\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7492\" class=\"wp-image-7492 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Peep-Hole-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7492\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Candice in the &#8216;Peep Hole&#8217;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Prior to eating dinner we had stopped at another bar (surprise!) and were told by our server, <strong>Summer<\/strong> about a <strong>\u2018Speak Easy\u2019<\/strong> in town. She said all you have to do is go down the street and around the corner, behind this building and look for a door with <strong>gas lamps<\/strong> over it and <strong>no name<\/strong>. There will be a doorbell to ring and then someone will open the <strong>\u2018peep hole\u2019<\/strong>\u00a0and maybe let you in. After dinner we did just that and <strong>Candice\u2019s <\/strong>face appeared in the \u2018peep hole\u2019, we said, <strong>\u201cSummer sent us\u201d<\/strong>. She let us in. The place, called <strong>\u20181122\u2019<\/strong>, because the address is 1122 Railroad Ave, has only been open for just over a month and is run by four young men who come from different parts of the country, bringing with them their special mixology talent that makes for a most creative drink menu, many of which required heat, smoke and\/or fire. Mine, at left, <a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=7494\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7494\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-7494 alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Mint-1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>required the harvesting of an entire mint farm.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7495\" style=\"width: 179px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=7495\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7495\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7495\" class=\"wp-image-7495 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Daou6-169x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"169\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Daou6-169x300.png 169w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Daou6-577x1024.png 577w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Daou6.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 169px) 100vw, 169px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7495\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Daou Winery<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong><u>Monday<\/u><\/strong> \u2013 Breakfast at <strong>Joe\u2019s Place<\/strong>, a restaurant that describes itself as a greasy spoon, hole in the wall \u2013 great breakfast, sassy waitresses. Then to <strong>Daou Winery<\/strong>, which offers great wines and even greater views of the <strong>Paso Robles valley<\/strong>. We were given a tour and history of the winery and then sat down for cheese and charcuterie (I didn\u2019t know what it meant either, but I was embarrassed to ask \u2013 it\u2019s chorizo, berries, prosciutto, pate, etc., served with cheese and \u2018paired\u2019 with various wines). Daou is a <strong>MUST<\/strong> if you\u2019re visiting wineries in Paso Robles.
