At least it seemed that way. All you need to do to confirm that <strong>\u2018Mable-Hesper Steam Engine Days\u2019<\/strong> is something out of <strong><em>Mayberry RFD<\/em><\/strong> is to check out the agenda items for this year\u2019s event:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Parade of Tractors<\/strong> and <strong>Steam Engines<\/strong> followed by a dance at the <strong>Legion Hall<\/strong> featuring the <strong>Buck Hollow Band<\/strong> and <strong>The Toe Tappers<\/strong>. Tractor pull tomorrow<\/li>\n<li><strong>Model Railroad Show<\/strong> followed by the <strong>Little Miss Mabel pageant<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bean Bag<\/strong> and <strong>Kickball Tournament<\/strong> followed by <strong>Bingo<\/strong> at the <strong>Dairy Barn<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pumpkin Contest Weigh In<\/strong> followed by the <strong>Quilt Show<\/strong> at the <strong>Fair Grounds<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><u>A Classy Class<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7642\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=7642\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7642\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7642\" class=\"wp-image-7642 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/68-float-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/68-float-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/68-float.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7642\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Class of &#8217;68 Steam Engine Days float<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While this alone would have been enough to get us back to Minnesota, the real impetus was Linda\u2019s 50<sup>th<\/sup> high school class reunion. There were a total of 48 members in the <strong>Mable-Canton Cougar<\/strong> class of &#8217;68. The town of <strong>Mable <\/strong>had<strong> 780 people<\/strong>, <strong>Canton 342 i<\/strong>n the 2010 census. In fact the towns are still so small that the reunion took place in a winery just across the border in Iowa; yes, a <strong>winery in Iowa<\/strong> \u2013 rows of grapes surrounded by rows of corn.<\/p>\n<p>If the expectation for the reunion was that I was going to be surround my a bunch of country bumpkins that I didn&#8217;t know or cared to know, that couldn&#8217;t be further from the truth.\u00a0 This group, mostly women (there were only 3 men from the class in attendance) were not just friendly and &#8216;<strong>Minnesota nice&#8217;,<\/strong> they were a group of sophisticated, educated and accomplished women.\u00a0 After supper (dinner is served at noon don&#8217;t cha know) there was an open discussion amongst the group as to whether they felt disadvantaged attending a small, rural school in southern Minnesota.\u00a0 The response was an overwhelming &#8216;No!&#8217;\u00a0 In fact they made it abundantly clear that they felt\u00a0privileged to attend a school where they could not only participate in clubs, student government, band, athletics and virtually everything that went on at the school, but were encouraged to do so because the school was small.\u00a0 A stark contrast to today&#8217;s students who, in order to succeed, typically do one thing all year long.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7643\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=7643\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7643\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7643\" class=\"wp-image-7643 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Buck-1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Buck-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Buck-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Buck-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-7643\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Buck Hollow (left) and his (geriatric) Band<\/p><\/div>\n<p>After the reunion many of the classmates, including us, headed for the dance at the <strong>American Legion Hall in Mable<\/strong>, after all it was Steam Engine Days and everybody was in town and in a party mood. The Legion Hall is a large facility with two big rooms connected by a bar. One side had the <strong>Buck Hollow Band<\/strong> and a huge dance floor, filled with old and young alike, while the other side was a \u2018sports bar\u2019 with TVs, pool tables and folks just having a beer and shooting the breeze.\u00a0 I wish I had a picture to show you how great this felt just being in this environment.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Take Me Home Country Roads . . . Please!<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I drove Starlet\u2019s, my sister-in-law, car to and from the reunion and Steam Engine Days, and I have to tell you, it was quite an experience. During the day the narrow roads lead you through a vast rolling pastoral landscape of corn fields dotted by pristine farm houses and silos \u2013 it is truly amazing. At night, a different story. There are <strong>no street lights<\/strong>, in fact there are not any lights, so driving these dare, narrow two-lane roads becomes a significant challenge. When was the last time you were constantly clicking your high beams on and off? While on one of these winding roads going from the reunion to the dance, I was suddenly confronted with a <strong>deer<\/strong> crossing the road. I slammed on the brakes and swerved as much as the narrow road would allow me and the deer turned slightly so I just grazed him as one of his antlers put a small scratch on the car door &#8211; Sorry Starlet!\u00a0<span style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">That doesn\u2019t happen much in Orange County.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><u>A special tender moment<a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=7646\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-7646\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-7646 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Memory-2-224x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"224\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Memory-2-224x300.jpg 224w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/Memory-2.jpg 233w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 224px) 100vw, 224px\" \/><\/a><\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One afternoon we sang at a <strong>Memory Care Center<\/strong> for Alzheimers and dementia in Rochester, MN.\u00a0 There were about 20 senior residents sitting and listening, many singing along with us. When we were finished, an older gentleman wearing an Army Veteran ball cap, motioned to Linda to come over. She walked over to him and he looked her in the eye for a long time and finally said, \u201cIs that you?\u201d Linda, not wanting to ruin the man\u2019s illusion, replied, \u201cYes\u201d. He said, \u201cHow have you been?\u201d Linda responded, \u201cI\u2019m good, how about you?\u201d \u201cGood now,\u201d he said, with tears in his eyes. We assumed that he must of thought Linda was either his wife or daughter. Linda asked him if she could give him a hug. He happily agreed.
