a judicial wing, an arts building and a heliport (which was never built).\u00a0 Still, as I led tour after tour on the weekends my appreciation for his architecture grew.\u00a0 In my opinion, no part of the building was more stunning than the library, with its <strong>rounded ceiling and open spaces<\/strong>.\u00a0 I was fortunate enough to develop a love of books from a grammar school teacher who spent a whole year teaching us how to read a book.\u00a0 She introduced me to Nancy Drew, Tom Sawyer and Louisa May Alcott.\u00a0 So, oftentimes on the weekend when my fellow tour guide and I didn&#8217;t feel like leading a tour, we&#8217;d put a sign on the desk <strong>saying we were out touring<\/strong> and would return in 30 minutes.\u00a0 And then we would sneak off to the library.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7894\" style=\"width: 201px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7894\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7894\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190112_094242-1279260124-1547312494596.jpg?w=490\" alt=\"20190112_094242-1279260124-1547312361242.jpg\" width=\"191\" height=\"340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190112_094242-1279260124-1547312494596.jpg 1439w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190112_094242-1279260124-1547312494596-169x300.jpg 169w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190112_094242-1279260124-1547312494596-768x1366.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190112_094242-1279260124-1547312494596-576x1024.jpg 576w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 191px) 100vw, 191px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7894\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Part of my beloved<\/strong> <strong>library<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>Over the years, whether I was in a studio apartment or a larger home, I always maintained a library.\u00a0 To this day I have some of my <strong>college textbooks<\/strong>, which come in handy when I want to learn something about ancient history!\u00a0 In my current house we converted what the architect considered a necessity, a fourth bathroom, into something I considered an absolute must &#8211; <strong>a library.<\/strong>\u00a0 I even organized it by subject matter and author.\u00a0 I know, I&#8217;m a geek.\u00a0 So, when the eBook revolution came about I was one of those who swore I would never convert.\u00a0 I scoffed at those who jumped on the bandwagon, even as I lugged my huge canvas bag of books on every vacation.\u00a0 I think it was on one of those trips when my husband commented about the <strong>&#8220;rock collection&#8221;<\/strong> I&#8217;d brought along, that I began considering an eReader.\u00a0 In 2010 I relented and bought my first Kindle.\u00a0 I&#8217;m now on my fourth.\u00a0 I love that I can store hundreds of books, that I can read at night with the light off so as not to bother my husband or Dash the Wonder Dog, and it has kept me amused as I&#8217;ve waited at doctor&#8217;s offices, airports and the DMV.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7893\" style=\"width: 357px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7893\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7893\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190103_123607.jpg\" alt=\"20190103_123607\" width=\"347\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190103_123607.jpg 590w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/20190103_123607-300x166.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 347px) 100vw, 347px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7893\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>There&#8217;s room for both!<\/strong><\/p><\/div>\n<p>So it was with some interest that I read an article in <strong>Inc. Magazine<\/strong> recently noting that according to The Wall Street Journal, sales of traditional print books rose by 5 percent in the US last year, while sales of <strong>eBooks plunged by 17 percent<\/strong>.\u00a0 No one knows exactly why that happened or if it&#8217;s a lasting trend.\u00a0 They do cite two very good reasons for the switch.\u00a0 First, real books can be shared.\u00a0 Remember the days when we paid $20 for a book and then passed it around to 10 friends?\u00a0 Now <strong>everyone has to pay<\/strong> around $13 for their own download.\u00a0 The second reason they cited is that real books make more meaningful gifts.\u00a0 I couldn&#8217;t agree more.\u00a0 I still remember who gave me books as gifts and the sentiment behind the purchase.\u00a0 I also love a hardcover when I&#8217;m reading one of my historical biographies with a <strong>complicated family tree<\/strong> illustration just so I can easily flip to the chart when I can&#8217;t remember who&#8217;s married to whom.<\/p>\n<p>Those are indeed good reasons to buy a real book, but last night I discovered perhaps the best reason.\u00a0 A week ago my daily email from Kindle advertised a <strong>novel about women in WWII<\/strong>.\u00a0 Always a sucker for a good war book, I decided to download it.\u00a0 Amazon informed that I already owned it.\u00a0 So I went to my archives and, indeed, I bought it in 2013.\u00a0 I downloaded it to my current device and began reading.\u00a0 It wasn&#8217;t until last night, <strong>one third through the book<\/strong>, that I realized I&#8217;ve read it before.\u00a0 Hey, I&#8217;m not beating myself up.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t remember what I had for dinner last night, much less a book I read six years ago.\u00a0 But thinking about this post today I realized that perhaps the best reason for a real book is that after you&#8217;ve read it there are <strong>creases in the spine<\/strong> or perhaps a dog-eared page or two, alerting you that you&#8217;ve been down that path before.\u00a0 On the upside, re-reading a good book is kind of like meeting an old friend.\u00a0 I guess there are benefits to losing your memory!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Suzanne Sparrow Watson One of the best jobs I ever held was as a tour guide at the Marin County Civic Center back in the mid-1960&#8217;s.\u00a0 The iconic building was the last of Frank Lloyd Wright&#8217;s masterpieces.\u00a0 In fact, &hellip;
