Because of its location, in the middle of the <strong>Mediterranean<\/strong>, it was a strategic island to have control of and was thus taken over in turn by the <strong>Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Romans, Byzantines, Normans, Aragoneze, French<\/strong> and<strong> British<\/strong>. During World War II the <strong>Germans <\/strong>wanted to add their name to the list, but despite the <strong>Luftwaffe<\/strong> leveling some of the oldest buildings in the world, they were turned back by Allied forces and now Malta remains as an independent country.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8250\" style=\"width: 160px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=8250\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8250\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8250\" class=\"wp-image-8250 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/06\/Shoot-me-150x150.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8250\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">In Malta &#8211; just shoot me!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I think the day our ship arrived in Malta\u2019s port city of <strong>Valletta<\/strong>, all of the above-mentioned nationalities were represented there, plus tourists from <strong>four cruise ships<\/strong> \u2013 it was wall-to-wall in this walled city. So a 10-minute walk to the \u2018lift\u2019 that took us up the walled city\u2019s fa\u00e7ade and a walk down the crowded main street filled with tee shirt and trinket shops was all the Malta we wanted to see. I\u2019ll admit that I felt a bit like a shallow tourist, not really appreciating the history or the present culture of this historic country, but it was crowded and hot. I didn\u2019t even stop to have a local beer!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Katakolon, Greece<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8253\" style=\"width: 269px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=8253\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8253\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8253\" class=\"wp-image-8253 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Katakolo.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8253\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Katakolon &#8211; yes, that&#8217;s it &#8211; really!<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If you were looking to visit a Greek island and have imagined those stark white building stacked along a pristine coastline over azure waters; or if you were looking to stroll amongst the antiquities of ancient Greece\u2019s structures like the <strong>Acropolis<\/strong> or <strong>Parthenon<\/strong>, don\u2019t go to Katakolon. Its claim to fame is that it was the location of the very first <strong>Olympic games<\/strong>. We did not take the 30-minute drive to the original Olympic site, as we assumed most of the athletes had already gone back home. We did wander the main street of town (there was only one), which was about three short blocks long, and were subjected to old Greek men sitting outside their store like carnival barkers, trying to get us to walk in and buy something. The tour of the town was quick and uneventful, but Jack and I did stay long enough to enjoyed a famous Greek <strong>Gyro<\/strong> sandwich and a <strong>Mythos<\/strong> beer at a beachside caf\u00e9, which was quite good.\u00a0 But I&#8217;m not checking Greece off my bucket list based on this visit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Day at Seas<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what I discovered during our \u2018Day at Sea\u2019<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The Budds and Chuck and I nearly flunked out of our <strong>&#8216;Pasta Cooking Class&#8217;<\/strong>\n<p><div id=\"attachment_8260\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=8260\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8260\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8260\" class=\"wp-image-8260 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/4-cooks-300x185.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/4-cooks-300x185.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/4-cooks-768x473.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/4-cooks-1024x631.jpeg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8260\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">JJ, Jack, Chuck &amp; I just before we got thrown out<\/p><\/div><\/li>\n<li>I couldn&#8217;t concentrate during the <strong>Zen \u2018doodle art&#8217;<\/strong> class<\/li>\n<li>Two-piece bathing suits are not necessarily worn by thin, young women<\/li>\n<li>After five days on board, I still had difficulty finding the way back to my room<\/li>\n<li>Bingo is boring<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Kotor, Montenegro<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>OK, this is more like it! Just getting to the historic, old city of Kotor was spectacular, as it requires the ship\u00a0to traverse 17 miles of magnificent bay with high mountains on each side creating the <strong>\u2018Montenegro fjords\u2019.<\/strong>\u00a0We docked and were greeted by our guide, <strong>Rajan<\/strong> (pronounced Ryan).\u00a0 We wondered, Is he another Alfonzo or another Cammie? The big smile and warm welcome assuaged our fears immediately. We discovered that one of the keys to being a really good guide is to have been born and raised in the area you are guiding in \u2013 Rajan was. He was not only personable with a good sense of humor, but could speak intelligently on any subjects, from the politics of the country to cheese varieties in the farmer&#8217;s market.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8263\" style=\"width: 460px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=8263\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8263\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8263\" class=\"wp-image-8263\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Kotor3-1024x727.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"450\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Kotor3-1024x727.png 1024w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Kotor3-300x213.png 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Kotor3-768x545.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8263\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Above Kotor with our ship behind us in port<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Our tour had <strong>two parts<\/strong>, first a stroll through the fairly small walled city where Rajan pointed out some of the more interesting\/historical sites, as he knew our ship was going to be in port until 11:00 p.m. and thus we had time later to explore the city on our own. The second part of the tour was a visit to the <strong>olive-producing region<\/strong> of the country, which was about a 45 minute drive from the port. We hopped in our van and headed up the mountains surrounding Kotor\u2019s cove, providing us some amazing views.<\/p>\n<p>When we arrived at the olive orchard, the owner, whose family had owned the business for over six generations, greeted us with a smile and brought us inside an old olive press room and served us a lunch of cheese, prosciutto, tomatoes, bread and, of course, olive oil, but first, a shot of brandy.\u00a0 Yes, it&#8217;s a custom here and we certainly didn\u2019t want to piss off the locals. We learned all about olive growing, pressing and tasting \u2013 we now know what <strong>\u2018Extra Virgin Olive Oil<\/strong>\u2019 means &#8211; to my surprise virgins have nothing to do with it!<\/p>\n<p>We returned to Kotor for a stroll through the city as the lights came up allowing this city to show off yet another side of its beauty. Great city + great guide = great experience!<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Travel tip<\/strong>: Skip Malta and Katakolo and go directly from Sicily to Montenegro . . . and don\u2019t play bingo!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Meanwhile back at the ship:<\/strong> A group of about 100 plastic surgeons were having a conference on this cruise and they brought along their \u2018significant others\u2019.
