{"id":8461,"date":"2019-09-16T09:00:18","date_gmt":"2019-09-16T16:00:18","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=8461"},"modified":"2019-09-15T00:48:06","modified_gmt":"2019-09-15T07:48:06","slug":"8461","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=8461","title":{"rendered":"Italy&#8217;s Hilltops &#038; Coastlines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Bob Sparrow<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8468\" style=\"width: 277px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=8468\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8468\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8468\" class=\"wp-image-8468 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/funicular.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"189\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8468\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Funicular<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The dinner I had to rush off to after I posted on Thursday required us to walk about a mile and a half to the base of a <strong>funicular<\/strong>, which took us to the top of the mountain, via a nearly 40 degree climb, where sits the quaint little village of <strong>Montecatini Alto<\/strong>.\u00a0 We had another perfect weather day so we could see for miles and miles &#8211; no foul weather gear needed here.\u00a0 Just prior to sunset we walked the perimeter of the village taking in the spectacular views in every directions.\u00a0 We then settled in at a bar (What a surprise!) on the town square and enjoyed a few cocktails before we moved next door where we had made dinner reservations.\u00a0 We were seated on the patio on a beautiful evening, and while we were virtually alone at the restaurant at 7:30, when we left around 10:30 the place was packed.\u00a0 We still haven&#8217;t adjusted to the late dining habits of the Italians.\u00a0 With all the pasta I&#8217;d been eating for the last week, I decided to order a steak &#8211; it was delicious.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8469\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=8469\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8469\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8469\" class=\"wp-image-8469 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/gimignano-300x120.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"120\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/gimignano-300x120.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/gimignano.jpeg 355w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8469\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">San Gimignano<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Thursday morning we were back on the bus at 8:30, headed for the walled medieval town of <strong>San Gimignano<\/strong>.\u00a0 Normally an hour and a half bus ride would not be very interesting, but Sergio did another &#8216;stand up&#8217; routine about American TV shows, his comment about <em><strong>Murder She Wrote<\/strong> <\/em>was something like, &#8220;If Angela Lansbury invites you to dinner, DON&#8221;T GO, someone is going to get murdered and it could be you!&#8221; He had us rolling in the aisles!\u00a0 Before we hit this <strong>Tuscan<\/strong> city, we visited a cheese farm where we were given a tour by the owner, met the cows and goats and enjoyed some great cheeses.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8471\" style=\"width: 285px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=8471\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8471\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8471\" class=\"wp-image-8471 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/gelato.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8471\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Italian gelato<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While wandering through town we found the award winning <strong>gelato<\/strong> shop that Sergio has directed us to\u00a0 and got in line.\u00a0 Great gelato!! We&#8217;re back on the bus (or Comedy Central as we now call it) and head back to our hotel to get ready for our <strong>&#8216;Farewell Dinner&#8217;<\/strong> at another hilltop restaurant overlooking the Tuscany valley.\u00a0 <strong>1st course<\/strong>: salami and other meats, <strong>2nd course<\/strong>: bean soup (delicious!), <strong>3rd course<\/strong>: pasta with cream sauce, <strong>4th course<\/strong>: pasta with red sauce, <strong>5th course<\/strong>: beef stew and potatoes, <strong>6th course<\/strong>: desert (not sure what it was or how it tasted, my taste buds had checked out after the serving of the second pasta).\u00a0 And, of course, the wine flowed freely.\u00a0 We were all sad to leaving Sergio, but looking forward to the next stop on our own &#8211; <strong>Cinque Terre.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8475\" style=\"width: 269px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=8475\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8475\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8475\" class=\"wp-image-8475 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/09\/ct-on-off.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"259\" height=\"194\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8475\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">&#8216;On-Off Boat&#8217;<\/p><\/div>\n<p>These five towns built on the cliffs overlooking the <strong>Mediterranean<\/strong> are beautiful; we stayed in <strong>Monterosso<\/strong>, the largest of the villages and took an <strong>&#8216;on-off boat&#8217;<\/strong> to visit the other four &#8211; actually only three as one village doesn&#8217;t have a port.
