{"id":8540,"date":"2019-10-14T09:00:56","date_gmt":"2019-10-14T16:00:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=8540"},"modified":"2019-10-12T07:39:31","modified_gmt":"2019-10-12T14:39:31","slug":"all-the-news-thats-fit-to-spew","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=8540","title":{"rendered":"ALL THE NEWS THAT&#8217;S FIT TO SPEW"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Suzanne Sparrow Watson<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=8537\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8537\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8537\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/true-or-false-500x383-300x230.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/true-or-false-500x383-300x230.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/true-or-false-500x383.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I met up with a friend at the gym last week and as she was<strong> whirling away<\/strong> on the stationary bike she tried to find an unbiased news report on one of the five TV&#8217;s in front of her.\u00a0 &#8220;Where do you go to get unbiased news&#8221;, she asked, as she swiveled between CNN, Fox and MSNBC. \u00a0 &#8220;Sesame Street&#8221;, I responded, &#8220;it tells me everything I need to get by in life&#8221;.\u00a0 I was only half-kidding but it is a subject I&#8217;ve been thinking about in this <strong>increasingly divisive atmosphere<\/strong> we&#8217;re in.\u00a0 As my brother correctly pointed out last week, we are Presbyterians so we don&#8217;t wade into the political fray in this forum.\u00a0 However, I will observe that every network seems to have camped out on one part of the divide or the other and they&#8217;re all getting richer for it.\u00a0 The networks obviously pander to their audience, <strong>grasping for ratings<\/strong> and ad revenue at the expense of our edification.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=8538\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8538\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8538\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Media-Bias-Chart-2018_Q320-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Media-Bias-Chart-2018_Q320-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Media-Bias-Chart-2018_Q320-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Media-Bias-Chart-2018_Q320.jpg 320w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>I know I&#8217;m not the only one who is <strong>disgusted by the news coverage<\/strong>.\u00a0 Sure, I could watch C-SPAN all day long but that smacks of being a bit too nerdy, not to mention my tolerance for windbags is at low ebb right now.\u00a0 I consulted my friend, Google, and found several charts that basically tell us what we already know &#8211; a few organizations (mostly print) try for impartiality, but most fall into either left-or-right leaning, and then there&#8217;s a whole category on the bottom of both sides that is garbage.\u00a0 So, where DO we go?\u00a0 I found a website, <strong>allsides.com<\/strong>, that provides articles on the same subject by left, center and right leaning print media.\u00a0 That seems like a whole lot of reading for me.\u00a0 I&#8217;m trying to think of a subject that would interest me enough to read <em>thre<\/em>e articles about it.\u00a0 Outside of the Food section, I couldn&#8217;t think of one. \u00a0 One could always go to <strong>mediabiasfactcheck.com<\/strong> but there are a LOT of ads and it&#8217;s a bit distracting.\u00a0 Snopes, of course, has been the go-to for figuring out internet and Facebook claims but there are wide-ranging topics one has to wade through, such as today&#8217;s top question: Can the <strong>snakehead fish<\/strong> survive on land?\u00a0 I&#8217;m sure that&#8217;s of great interest to the snakehead fish, but I venture it&#8217;s of limited interest to everyone else.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=8539\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8539\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-8539 \" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/snl-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/snl-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/snl.jpg 474w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 320px) 100vw, 320px\" \/><\/a>What I really long for are newscasts that present information in a factual way, and then have really smart people debate the issue in-depth so that I can sort through the facts and form my own opinion.\u00a0 For those of us of a certain age, we can recall the <em>60 Minute<\/em>s segment, <strong>Point\/Counterpoint<\/strong> featuring Shana Alexander and James Kilpatrick.\u00a0 It was good old-fashioned sparring over a new topic each week and was always good entertainment as well.\u00a0 So good, in fact, that it spawned the <em>Saturday Night Liv<\/em>e parody of it featuring Dan Ackroyd and Jane Curtin.\u00a0 Its seminal line may have been, <strong>&#8220;Jane, you ignorant slut&#8221;<\/strong>.\u00a0 Mark Shields and David Brooks do a political point\/counterpoint on the Friday night edition of The PBS News Hour, but somehow, it just isn&#8217;t the same.<\/p>\n<p>The upshot of all this is <strong>I barely watch the news<\/strong> at all anymore.\u00a0 I read a bit and try to vary my periodicals so I get different opinions.\u00a0 I&#8217;m saving my TV watching for Netflix.\u00a0 I just looked up the 20 most popular <strong>British TV series<\/strong>, many of which have multiple seasons available for viewing.\u00a0 The advantage of the British shows is that you get to hear that glorious accent and there aren&#8217;t any references to American politics.\u00a0 I&#8217;m hoping these shows will keep me occupied though the 2020 election.
