{"id":8941,"date":"2020-03-23T10:00:38","date_gmt":"2020-03-23T17:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=8941"},"modified":"2020-03-23T07:27:31","modified_gmt":"2020-03-23T14:27:31","slug":"pandemic-playtime","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=8941","title":{"rendered":"PANDEMIC PLANS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Suzanne Sparrow Watson<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=8946\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8946\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8946\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/maks-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/maks-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/maks.jpg 730w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Well, it&#8217;s been quite the week, heh?\u00a0 Last week at this time I had all sorts of <strong>social engagements and golf games<\/strong> on the calendar.\u00a0 Today, I think of a trip to the grocery store as a major outing.\u00a0 Mind you, an outing the warrants rubber gloves and endless sheets of Clorox wipes.\u00a0 Who ever thought that going to pick up some rutabagas would become a life-threatening excursion?\u00a0 When they first told us to watch out for the elderly I envisioned the folks that Dash the Wonder Dog used to visit in the retirement care center.\u00a0 To my horror, I soon discovered that<em> I&#8217;m<\/em> considered elderly and, therefore, in a high-risk group.\u00a0 Our paranoia about the virus has resulted in some changes around here.\u00a0 We&#8217;ve begun to <strong>look at our friends in a whole new light<\/strong> &#8211; do we really think the Smiths wash their hands as thoroughly as they should?\u00a0 Is Sally going to the grocery store and then not wiping down her countertops?\u00a0 And what about those Johnsons?\u00a0 They had their kids and grandkids in for spring break last week.\u00a0 Surely they are swimming in germs over at their house.\u00a0 Just to make it easy, we are not only socially distancing &#8211; we are socially hibernating.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=8945\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8945\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-8945\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/noose-290x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"290\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/noose-290x300.jpg 290w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/noose.jpg 720w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 290px) 100vw, 290px\" \/><\/a>The other change is that we now spend a fair amount of time <strong>figuring out what to do.<\/strong>\u00a0 Normally, each morning when we walk Dash we talk about our plans for the day.\u00a0 Now, with nothing on our calendar, that conversation is a little stretched for content.\u00a0 My husband&#8217;s main &#8220;job&#8221; is to play golf.\u00a0 His secondary job is to watch golf and hockey on TV. But now our golf course has closed down and all sports have been suspended so he&#8217;s out of work.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not sure that the new relief package is going to cover his &#8220;unemployment&#8221;.\u00a0 But we may need it.\u00a0 His occasional pastime is <strong>watching the stock market<\/strong> but we&#8217;ve had to put an end to that as well &#8211; his heart just couldn&#8217;t take it anymore.\u00a0 I usually knit a couple of hours a day because I enjoy it and it&#8217;s a calming activity.\u00a0 But now that I have all the time in the world and no place to go, my knitting feels like a time-filler, which is sadly true.\u00a0 Yesterday I tackled some ironing I&#8217;ve been putting off and I cleaned the kitchen for the n-th time and then I ran out of ideas.\u00a0 Now I&#8217;m wishing that I hadn&#8217;t spent so much time last year organizing my closets.\u00a0 Damn that <strong>&#8220;sparking joy&#8221; craze.\u00a0<\/strong> My spice rack is alphabetized, the sock drawer is neat as a pin, and all of my pantry items are resting in their designated baskets. I&#8217;m looking for other activities to keep me entertained, and &#8211; this is important &#8211; refrain me from killing my husband. My friends and I joke that among the 30-somethings we will see a baby boom in 9 months, while some of us older folks may well end up in the hoosegow for murdering our spouse.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=8950\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-8950\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-8950\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/img_0291-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/img_0291-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/img_0291-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/img_0291-1024x768.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>We&#8217;re only <strong>8 days into the 15 day<\/strong> &#8220;distancing&#8221; suggestion and I&#8217;m already antsy.\u00a0 I&#8217;ll get over it.\u00a0 Really, it&#8217;s not much of a sacrifice to sit on the couch with Dash, watch trashy TV and knit.\u00a0 When I think about what the front line people at hospitals are going through it gives me shivers.\u00a0 I can&#8217;t imagine their stress &#8211; not only the anticipation of a <strong>coronavirus tsunami<\/strong>, but the risk they take for themselves and their families working so near the disease.\u00a0 I worry about all the small businesses that may be lost because we all have to stay home &#8211; businesses that have provided our communities with so much diversity and character.\u00a0 But I am optimistic that we will all get through this.\u00a0 I&#8217;m cheered by some <strong>unusual bi-partisanship<\/strong> in Washington and how citizens of all stripes are pulling together.\u00a0 For every stupid college student on the beach in Florida saying they don&#8217;t care if they infect others, there are 10 great kids who are volunteering to help the elderly and needy.\u00a0 It&#8217;s uplifting and perhaps just what we needed to remind us that we&#8217;re all Americans.<\/p>\n<p>I hope that in two weeks time when I&#8217;m writing this blog we will be through the worst of it.\u00a0 But according to this website <a href=\"https:\/\/covidactnow.org\/\">https:\/\/covidactnow.org\/<\/a>\u00a0 we may just be at the beginning.\u00a0 So just in case, does anyone have the name of a good bail bondsman?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Suzanne Sparrow Watson &nbsp;
