Cabin Fever?  Vinophobia?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Bob Sparrow<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=9064\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9064\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-9064\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cells-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cells-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cells-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/cells.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Under the heading of <strong>\u2018Is the cure worse than the disease?<\/strong> I offer some help to those who are going stir-crazy or are experiencing cabin fever.<\/p>\n<p>First some clinical definitions:<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Stir<\/strong>&#8211;<strong>Crazy&#8217;<\/strong>, derived from the use of\u00a0<strong>stir<\/strong> to mean &#8216;prison&#8217;; a person is stir-crazy if they are experiencing isolation from civilization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8216;Cabin fever&#8217;<\/strong>\u00a0refers to the distressing claustrophobic irritability or restlessness experienced when\u00a0a\u00a0person, or group, is stuck at an isolated location or in confined quarters for an extended period of time.<\/p>\n<p>You may also want to be on the lookout for <strong>&#8216;vinophobia&#8217;<\/strong> &#8211; the fear of running out of wine while in isolation.<\/p>\n<p>Are these &#8216;diseases&#8217; real psychiatric diagnosis?\u00a0 No, but they are real things.\u00a0 Following are some suggestions by clinical psychologist, Joel Klapow, who wrote the suggestions to help people who are <strong>cooped up during a snowy winter<\/strong>, but I think you\u2019ll see that they apply to us all during this &#8216;covid confinement&#8217;.\u00a0 He says . . .<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese maladies are basically your mind\u2019s way of telling you that the environment you are in is less than optimal for normal functioning.\u00a0 It\u2019s when you\u2019re in a space of restricted freedom for a period of time that you can no longer tolerate.\u201d He offers the following remedies <em>(I offer my snappy rejoinders, following in italics)\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong> Change your diet<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Avoid high carb, high-fat foods, which can make you feel even more inactive. Instead, seek out lean<a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=9069\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9069\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-9069 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/wine-store-e1589051274850.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"213\" \/><\/a> proteins that contain a lot of omega-3 fatty acids. These can boost your mood, and often contain B12 and vitamin D, which help regulate your emotions.\u00a0\u00a0<em>(This is where that vinophobia comes in &#8211; I don&#8217;t know about all that omega-3, B-12 crap, but under no circumstance should you take wine out of your diet)<\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> Get outside\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Time in the sun will give you access to Vitamin D, which will boost your mood.\u00a0<em>(It will also get you away from your spouse and\/or family that is by now on your last nerve)<\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> Get regular exercise\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Don\u2019t feel like you need to go to the gym. Anything you do to keep your heart rate up for 30 minutes a day will help your mood. You can just go for a walk, or make a small change in your daily routine to see big changes in your spirits!!\u00a0<em>(What could be healthier than a good walk to the wine store?\u00a0 It will be like lifting weights on the way home)<\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong> Have a family game night<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Get your kids \u2013 and yourself \u2013 away from computer\/tablet\/phone screens for a few hours and bond over some board games or puzzles.\u00a0\u00a0<em>(If the board games fail, try hide and seek, but once the family hides, don&#8217;t seek)<\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong> Throw a party\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=9070\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9070\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9070\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/divorce.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/a>While it was nice to bond with your family over a marathon game of Monopoly, you might want to interact with other people. So consider planning a <strong><u>small <\/u><\/strong>party for friends or neighbors. Planning and preparing for the event will keep you active and help pass the time. With nice weather you can gather outside.\u00a0\u00a0<em>(My sense is that the most popular &#8216;party&#8217; will be the party of the first part or the party of the second part in a divorce law suit)<\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><b> Change your decor<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Sometimes, all it takes to make your surroundings feel different is a new look. Hang a picture or some other wall art or simply rearrange your furniture.\u00a0<em>(A new look could also include a face-lift, hair replacement or a . . . Oh, he&#8217;s talking about changing the look of your house &#8211; OK, move)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>7.\u00a0<strong>Avoid binge-watching\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Catching an entire season of the latest Netflix or Amazon series might seem tempting while you\u2019re so confined, but . . . <em>(there are not buts!\u00a0 It&#8217;s the only thing that makes being cooped up tolerable &#8211; sorry I&#8217;m not going to feel guilty about that!!)\u00a0\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>8. <strong>Take up an indoor hobby\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Being forced inside can give you time to catch up on work or tackle a home improvement project you\u2019ve been putting off. But you\u2019ve also been given a chance to try out a new hobby; be creative \u2013 what have you always been interested in, but never had the time to do?\u00a0<em>(I tend to disagree with Mr. Klapow here, I am already heavily involved in two hobbies, binge-watching the latest Netflix or Amazon series and wine drinking.\u00a0 My day is full!)<\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"9\">\n<li><strong> Open the shades<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>You\u2019ll not only make your surroundings feel brighter, but you\u2019ll also help warm your house.\u00a0 Once the <a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=9071\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9071\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-9071 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/2021.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/2021.jpg 225w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/2021-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>sun has set, you may want to add ambiance, charm, and light to your rooms with some unique and stylish lighting.\u00a0\u00a0<em>(My surroundings will feel brighter when they are no longer my surroundings.\u00a0 You want to brighten something up?\u00a0 Put your ambient charm where the sun don&#8217;t shine)<\/em><\/p>\n<ol start=\"10\">\n<li><strong> Think spring<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>We don\u2019t just mean \u201cKeep a positive attitude!\u201d (Although that\u2019s important too).
