{"id":9815,"date":"2021-02-22T09:00:37","date_gmt":"2021-02-22T17:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=9815"},"modified":"2021-02-22T08:20:00","modified_gmt":"2021-02-22T16:20:00","slug":"keeping-sharper-in-a-dull-world","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=9815","title":{"rendered":"Keeping Sharp in a Numbing World"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Bob Sparrow<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=9816\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9816\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9816\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Stay-Sharp-photo-148x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"363\" \/><\/a>As we continue to wade through this era of <strong>\u2018house arrest\u2019<\/strong>, as a society we have become sedentary bingers.\u00a0 We sit at home and binge on food, binge on drink, binge on computer time and binge-watch the latest <strong>Netflix<\/strong> series.\u00a0 How is this affecting us physically and mentally?\u00a0 Significantly!<\/p>\n<p>While we here at <strong>From A Bird\u2019s Eye View<\/strong> don\u2019t pretend to have the panacea, we will pass along some information that might be helpful in keeping you physically and mentally sharp . . . or sharper.\u00a0 Caveat: If you are not sharp to start with, reading this will not make you sharp.<\/p>\n<p>The information herein comes from a book I recently finished entitled, <em><strong>Keep<\/strong><\/em><strong><em>\u00a0Sharp<\/em><\/strong>, by <strong>Sanjay Gupta, MD<\/strong> (brain surgeon).\u00a0 It\u2019s currently a \u2018best seller\u2019 so perhaps you\u2019ve seen it or even read it (sorry for the redundancy here if you have).\u00a0 It\u2019s directed mostly at those of us older folks, who are concerned with dementia, but the principles of a healthy brain apply to all ages.\u00a0 To be honest, there is a lot of scientific stuff in the book that can get a little tedious, but it helps frame what you should be doing, both mentally and physically to <em>Keep<\/em><em>\u00a0Sharp<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The book first asks the question, \u201cAre you at risk for brain decline?\u201d\u00a0 Gupta list 24 items that could <strong>make you at risk<\/strong>.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a few:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Are you over 65?<\/li>\n<li>Do you sit most of the day?<\/li>\n<li>Are you overweight?<\/li>\n<li>Do you take meds for high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol?<\/li>\n<li>Do you have a smoking history?<\/li>\n<li>Do you lack social engagement?<\/li>\n<li>And of course, does Alzheimer\u2019s disease run in your family?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Yep, I too found myself &#8216;at risk&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>He also lists a number of<strong> myths<\/strong> about the brain, among them:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dementia is an inevitable consequence of old age<\/li>\n<li>We use only 10% of our brains<\/li>\n<li>A crossword puzzle a day keeps the doctor away<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Here\u2019s a brief summary of the five things Gupta suggests to keep your mind sharp no matter what your age:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Move<\/strong> \u2013 improve your cardio, strength, flexibility, balance<a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=9817\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9817\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-9817 size-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/brain-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/li>\n<li><strong>Discove<\/strong>r \u2013 take a class, learn a language, play games, develop a strong sense of purpose<\/li>\n<li><strong>Relax<\/strong> \u2013 sleep needs to remain constant throughout life (You don\u2019t need less as you get older). Regarding sleep:\n<ol>\n<li>sleep aids like Nyquil and \u2018PM\u2019 formulas are linked to higher chance of developing Alzheimer\u2019s.<\/li>\n<li>stick to a schedule<\/li>\n<li>avoid long naps<\/li>\n<li>don\u2019t be a night owl<\/li>\n<li><strong>eliminate electronics before bed<\/strong> \u2013 computer\/tablet\/phone screens contain \u2018blue wavelengths\u2019 that suppress melatonin.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Nourish<\/strong> \u2013 what\u2019s good for the heart is good for the brain\n<ol>\n<li>cut sugars<\/li>\n<li>hydrate<\/li>\n<li>eat fish\/more Omega-3 Fatty Acids<\/li>\n<li>reduce portions<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Connect<\/strong> \u2013 Crosswords get a B- for their ability to boost brain function, <strong>connecting with others, face-to-face, in person, gets an A\u00a0<\/strong>(Understand that we&#8217;ve had some restrictions in this regard).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=9818\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9818\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9818 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Lumosity.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"227\" \/><\/a>Not in the book, but something that I\u2019ve found good for brain health, is a download called <strong>Lumosity<\/strong>.\u00a0 It is a series of games and challenges that help keep the brain sharp.\u00a0 After completing a number of the challenges, you can see where your brain ranks with other people in your age group.
