{"id":9860,"date":"2021-03-15T11:03:28","date_gmt":"2021-03-15T18:03:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=9860"},"modified":"2021-03-15T10:45:19","modified_gmt":"2021-03-15T17:45:19","slug":"tis-a-fine-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?p=9860","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;TIS A FINE WEEK"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Suzanne Sparrow Watson<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=9865\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9865\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-9865\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/guiness-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"252\" height=\"252\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/guiness-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/guiness-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/guiness-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/guiness-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/guiness.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 252px) 100vw, 252px\" \/><\/a>Surely, &#8217;tis the best week of the year, is it not?\u00a0 <strong>St. Patrick&#8217;s Day<\/strong> is not until Wednesday but some of us have begun celebrating early.\u00a0 I am personally contributing to the festivities by <strong>drinking a pint of Guinness every day.<\/strong> Guinness is the mother&#8217;s milk of Ireland, and for good reason.\u00a0 Three years ago I had the good fortune of spending time in the Emerald Isle with four of my girlfriends.\u00a0 On the first day of the trip I ate something that didn&#8217;t agree with me.\u00a0 Our driver suggested that I &#8220;take a Guinness&#8221;, extolling it&#8217;s virtues as a cure-all for most any ailment.\u00a0 I gulped it down and, sure enough, I began to feel better.\u00a0 He went on to explain that when he was growing up, doctors were scarce &#8211; and unaffordable &#8211; so <strong>Irish mothers gave their children a nip of Guinness<\/strong> whenever they were sick, as it was believed to be chocked full of vitamins and minerals.\u00a0 Sort of the Irish version of Children&#8217;s\u00a0 One-A-Day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=9864\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9864\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-9864\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Good-for-you-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Good-for-you-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Good-for-you.jpg 450w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>Once back home I began to research the miracle of Guinness.\u00a0 Was it really a health food?\u00a0 Should I be drinking <em>more<\/em>?\u00a0 Turns out that back in the 1920s, when the <strong>\u201cGuinness is Good for You\u201d<\/strong> slogan was introduced, the claim was based on market research that found people felt good after they drank a pint of the dark and foamy stout.\u00a0 Okay, but substitute &#8220;stout&#8221; for almost any form of alcohol and you&#8217;d probably have the same result.\u00a0 Soon after the slogan gained popularity the flimsy claim was bolstered by the discovery that Guinness contains iron. A ha!\u00a0 Now we&#8217;re getting somewhere.\u00a0 Even pregnant women were advised to have an occasional pint. Of course, it would take something like a <strong>dozen pints a day<\/strong> for a woman to get her recommended daily allowance of iron, in which point the alcohol and calories would cause more harm than good.<\/p>\n<p>But in 2003 researchers at the University of Wisconsin found a <strong>truly redeeming feature<\/strong> of the beloved Guinness.\u00a0 Turns out that stout beer like Guinness (as opposed to lager and other light beer) is high in the antioxidant compounds called flavonoids\u2014similar to those found in red wine, tea and chocolate\u2014that can <strong>reduce the risk of heart attack<\/strong> from blood clotting.\u00a0 \u00a0The researchers carried out laboratory tests on dogs with clogged arteries, comparing the effects of Guinness and Heineken. Only those dogs fed Guinness had reduced clotting.\u00a0 Wow &#8211; red wine, chocolate, dogs and Guinness.\u00a0 The gods have come together to link all of my favorite things together into one healthy bundle!\u00a0 I should live to be 100.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=4251\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-4251\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-4251\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Paddys1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Paddys1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/Paddys1.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>My brother and I share a love for Ireland, even though our DNA results show <strong>our Irish heritage to be somewhat limited<\/strong>.\u00a0 I am 12% Irish and he is 8%, which doesn&#8217;t seem fair because he has frequented a lot more Irish pubs than I have.\u00a0 In fact, he has a unique ability to find an Irish pub everywhere he travels.\u00a0 When he hiked Machu Picchu,\u00a0 he fortified himself beforehand at <strong>Paddy&#8217;s Irish Pub in Cusco, Peru,<\/strong> which holds the distinction of being the highest elevation pub on the planet at over 11,156 feet.\u00a0 I recently watched the Amazon Prime Video movie <strong>&#8220;The Irish Pub&#8221;<\/strong> and it became clear why we cling to our small but powerful Irish ancestry.\u00a0 The documentary highlighted pubs all over Ireland, interviewing the owners and customers.\u00a0 Charming doesn&#8217;t begin to describe it.\u00a0 Yes, some of the pubs were dark and possibly had not been cleaned since 1947.\u00a0 But the owners and customers alike took <strong>great pride in their establishments<\/strong> and their welcoming of strangers.\u00a0 \u00a0Anyone who has visited Ireland can attest to that &#8211; the Irish seem to be universally good-natured and friendly.\u00a0 The film made it clear that the local pub provides a gathering place for people to chat and get to know one another and many customers remarked that they would rather do that than watch television.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/?attachment_id=9866\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9866\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-9866\" src=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/pubs-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"194\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/pubs-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/pubs-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/fromabirdseyeview.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/pubs.jpg 555w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 194px) 100vw, 194px\" \/><\/a>I think what we can conclude from all this is that America would be a far better &#8211;
