We are a brother-sister team that likes to write about our travels and life observations. Our goal is to simply entertain and get your week off to an interesting and perhaps thought-provoking start.  We’d love to have you become a subscriber so our posts come directly to your email – it’s free and we write a new blog every week and post it on Monday morning.

  1. I wanted to continue my request to get a hold of your cousin Linda Sparrow and see how things are with her. Thanks for the 6 names of my friends who died in the Vietnam War. My daughter who lives in Washington D.C. will do rubbings on the Vietnam Memorial for me. My days at NHS will never be forgotten. PS when I was a cheerleader Linda was a song girl! PS I graduated in 64 not 68, my bad!

    • Jim, sorry, but the information I gave you last time is all I have. Her name is Linda Musick and the last I know she was living in Northern California.

      • Hi Suzanne Jim Stevens1965 I was in a Beatle band from SSU. We came down to NHS and did a tryout and got the dance. We auditioned in the small gym. It was great to see all the kids that I knew. I hope you were there. So long ago . Thanks for your blog site. I won’t be able to attend the 64 reunion. Thanks again

  3. Thanks for your blog that I found about the friends that I had at Novato High that died in the Vietnam war. I am a graduate of NHS in 1964. My close friend was Mike Tandy. I am glad to find your blog. My daughter lives near Washington,DC and offered to do some rubbings from the wall. Can you send me the names of all 10 of them. I caiied the office at NHS and asked the secretary to go out to the flag pole and copy down the names of all 10 classmates. They said they were too busy! I was a cheerleader in 1964 and ran for asb president. A good friend of Linda Sparrow. Is she a relative of yours. Thank you for this blog. Jim Stevens

    • Hi Jim! Thanks so much for your note. Yes, Linda Sparrow is my cousin. You were probably a freshman when my brother, Bob, was a senior. I graduated in ’68 so just missed being at NHS when you were there.

The six names that appeared in my blog are the only NHS alumni that were killed in Vietnam. I have done extensive research on this and found that some men listed Novato as their hometown, however, they either were stationed at Hamilton AFB, or they did not attend NHS. If you find otherwise, I would be very interested in having their names.

Again, thanks for taking time to write.

      Best,
      Suzanne

      • I am so glad you wrote back. I would like to know about Linda. I dated her in high school. Was your family in the publishing business? I went on to SSU, it was originally Sonoma State College. I wrestled for 4 years, held asb rep at large and graduated with a BA in history and a minor in biology and black studies. I went into teaching in Santa Rosa and coached basketball and wrestling and founded the junior high wrestling league in Santa Rosa City Schools. I also served 22 years as a member of the Rohnert Park Parks and recreation commission. Is Linda still around. I would love to talk to her. Thanks for your site.

        • Jim, you have certainly led a busy life! Yes, my father owned Sparrow Printing in downtown Novato. I have not seen Linda in a few years, but I believe she is still living in Sonoma County. Her married name is Musick. Thanks again for your note.

  4. Dear SSW: OMG! I just came across your mention of Bette Reese, and you filled in info for us who had her as a journalism professor at College of Marin. I was a long time friend of hers until she sadly passed way too soon and have pictures you may like. I even visited her grave in Logan a few years back on the way to Jackson Hole. Would love to talk with you some day!!

  6. Hello to you both. My name is Kim and you both know my mother pretty well, Lovetta Craig? I recently went back to school and needed to do some research for my English class and on my Facebook timeline I asked if anyone could direct me to some “blogs”. My wonderful mother chimed in under 2 minutes of my post and directed me to you. I’ve been sitting here for the last 2 1/2 hours at least, reading through all your adventures, and let me just say that its been a great 2 1/2 hours!!! I have laughed out loud, cried and learned lots of great new things. I actually forgot what I was supposed to be researching for my English class while reading through everything. I am now a subscriber and will be eagerly waiting for Mondays stories of you and Dash the wonder dog!

    Happy Holidays,
    Kim

    • Thanks Kim, yes your mother is a dear friend and old high school classmate, although she was a class behind mine. Such a great comment you left, we are so glad to have you as a new subscriber and hope we can continue to entertain you for years to come. Say hi to your mom and thank you again for your kind words and subscription!
      Bob

  7. Regarding your article *They Were Soldiers* please contact me – my lost brother is one of the people you commented on, and I would like to know more.

    • Hello – who was your brother? I have included most of what is available in the post but the original source material can be found at http://www.coffeltdatabase.org/. Please let me know if you need any further information. I am so sorry for your loss.

  8. I recently received a call from one of Bob’s and my school friends–Bink McBride. He lives in Arizona and would like to contact “Moe” AKA Bob. His email address is pwmcbrideaz@gmail.com. My information is below. If any questions, just let me know. Thanks!

    • Thanks, Fran!! Always think of you when I write – I miss talking with you about a lot of things but especially our love of writing. Hope you are well.

      S.

  9. I love this! Good luck with the “skiing thing”. I lived in Lake Tahoe for 5 years and managed to avoid it. I just hate being cold. I stayed back at the cabin or condo and made fabulous food and cocktails for everyone’s triumpant return at the end of the day. Do what you excell at and enjoy!

  10. I’m subscribing today to be able to keep LIFE a little lighter and keep the connection to the FAMOUS Sparrow writing, and clever observations; For know, begin the flow, I will expect that Morning News in Verse, will set a high standard for a more positive journalism than we’re accustomed to having thrown at us by “if it bleeds, it leads” mentality.
“Go Ahead Make My Day” (somebody once said)

  11. You two make the gloomy days of winter a bit more bright each morning
keep up the rhymes of the times
    P.S. Happy Birthday Moe man

  12. What a delight!!

    Some of these put “things” in perfect perspective;
and some just leave me feeling “reflective.”

    • Arno – thanks so much for your nice comment! Our goal is to give everyone something to think about or chuckle about every morning so I’m glad we’ve done that for you. If you want to you can subscribe and the post will go to your email every morning so you don’t have to log into anything to get it. And we don’t give out email addresses to anyone so it’s safe. Hope you are doing well. Suzanne
